View Full Version : Lying Down vs. Standing Up for Infusion Set Insertion??

Any of you have this problem? We use the 90 degree 6mm inset with the "saucer popper" thing that injects the cannula very quickly. Well, my son did it at the endo's standing up and then pushing it against his tummy and shooting the thing in. It worked fine and didn't hurt afterwards. But then when we did it at home, and I told him to lye down on the bed to insert, it hurt afterwards. Could the lying down vs. standing up be the culprit?? Anyone have any experience with this. We only insert into the tummy at this time. He hasn't been brave enough to try other areas.

Thanks!

Oddly enough, we have the reverse. We use Abby's bum, and I've done both, she felt more discomfort after when I inserted it while standing up.

Mikey doesn't have any padding on his tummy. :D So I am thinking when he lies down the needle must go in deeper? Maybe I should insist on the bum-bum as well.

Lying down would cause the skin to stretch out, resulting in less padding. I could see that on the stomach this could cause more of a problem. I would love it if Abby would use her tummy, but that's a no go. It just would give her bum a break.

Since Julia's tummy flattens out, and she already doesn't have alot of body fat laying down seems to sting more. It was this way with both injections, and inserting a infusion set. When we do the bum, or leg though sitting, or laying seems to work better for us so that the muscles are not flexed. It seems to hurt more when they are flexed. Good luck, I hope you can find the position that is most comfy for your DS. Jamie

Thanks, I will tell him to stand up and pop it in. We have had to take out the cannula within a few minutes of insertion because of all the pain. One time, at the beginning of the insulin pump, I told him to keep it in for a while to see if the sting would diminish but it never did. We have gone through a number of these "double" insertions because of the pain. I don't want to keep using too many up because the insurance only pays for a certain amount for each month and they won't take kindly to us just tossing them away after a couple of minutes of use.

Unfortunately we have no experience of using the Inset on Mias tummy as she doesn't have enough fat there for any straight-in set. So, we too use her bum. We always have the same routine for changing sites, so Mia is always laying on her tummy watching TV when we change it. We have not had a problem with her position so far.

You are already going to insert standing up, but an important reason is the fat is accessible standing up and even leaning over a bit. When you lie down the fat settles back and is harder to insert into it.

My son discovered the sites are more comfortable inserted at the belly button line or lower.

I never knew why, but with the Quickset inserter (same principle) we were told to insert standing up straight. I thought it was so the skin would be a bit more taught and easier to pop through, but maybe it is the fat issue.

Aaron still won't do a straight-in set on his stomach, though he has more meat on his bones now and I think he could. We do it in the "love handles" place and I kind of poke him with a finger to find a spot with a bit of a cushion.

We were told to stand straight up as well. (No lean over)

:) He stood up this evening after his bath to pop it in and it didn't hurt afterwards. Thanks for all the tips and tricks!
