I was asked to donate $100 for another childs team, a girl at Kats school, same grade. And me and Kat and my kids walk for them. Im fighting some hard feelings about this. First of all, we cant afford $100 for anything. And I dont think its right to walk to support another child, why cant Kat have ateam of her own.....Im dying to know why you have to pay to walk. Why do you have to pay to show you care? Why is it only rich people or people who are able to actually get funds from other people get to do these walks? There must be thousands upon thousands of unrecognized T1D children in this world. Because they cant pay money to get in. This isnt right.

IS this is JDRF or an ADA walk?

There is no "entry" fee to walk in a JDRF walk. They would like each person to raise $100, but I know lots who walk and raise and donate nothing.

I don't know anything about ADA walks.

I'm kind of confused - why don't you have your own team? and why are they demanded a certain amount? I had plenty of people show up with $10. And I was ok with that.

I'd think, IMO, if you're going to walk, Kat would probably prefer to have her own team. Even if that team means just your immediate family.

I'm confused too.. is this a JDRF walk? We have plenty of walkers on our team that don't raise any money, we, as an immediate family, raise almost all of the money that Kaylee's team donates.. maybe its a team thing for this other family, you have to raise or donate $100 to walk with them..which is completely wrong IMO.. I couldn't afford $100 donation either! I think Kat should have her own team.. let them know that you appreciate the invitation but that you'll be walking with Kat's team..

First off, I don't know where these people get off telling you that you need to give $100 to walk with them=that's insane:eek: don't get me wrong, its nice they invited you to walk with them, but why are they saying you need to give that much to walk.
I agree with the others, plenty of people walk on our team for the JDRF walk who never give any $$$ but just come out to support Ryan.
Secondly, I'd say to start your own team. Its not hard, just sign up. You can make it as big or small of a team as you want. My team is big, but there are PLENTY of teams at our JDRF walk that only consists of 3-4 people.

Its JDRF walk set for October 19 in Huntsville. Heres what her email says.

Hey everyone, it's Jennie aka "Libby's Mom"! As all of you know my daughter was dx with juvenile diabetes in May of 2007. She was 6 years old at the time of dx. I will never forget hearing the words, "Libby will not be able to leave the hospital until you learn how to give her shots". I remember thinking, "why is this happening to her"? What did I do wrong? Today, I still wonder why did this happen to her!

Libby is still the same old Libby as all of you know. She does the same things we all do. She can eat most of the same things we do but she has to track what she eats and how much. She knows that she has to have a shot when she eats. It almost seems like a punishment. If you eat, you will have to go though the discomfort of a shot. The girls she "hangs" with are curious when she has to get a shot and all the adults that are a part of her life are very understanding of her condition and very accommodating.

I don't know if there are words to explain a child's life with diabetes. We just try to make it as "normal" as possible.

Libby would love to have each and everyone of you come out and walk with her this year. They are asking each person who walks to raise $100.00 to go towards finding a cure. Most important to a 7 year old is to have her friends and family at the walk to support her.

Below you will find a link to register to walk on Libby's team. Her team name is "Libby's Cheer Team". You have to register to walk. The roller derby team from Huntsville will be out there supporting Libby's team.

If you have any questions, you can email me, "Libby's Mom" or you may be able to find the answers on the website. www.jdrf.org.

The link to register for Libby's Cheer Team http://walk.jdrf.org/register.cfm?id=87220393

Please feel free to forward this email to your friends and family. Anyone can make a donation at www.jdrf.org.

Thank you to everyone that has touched my daughter's life! She is a very special little girl!

After I got this, I tried to start Kat a team, but couldnt do it because I realized there was no way we could raise money in a few days. She has never done a walk before because we always thought you had to raise thousands of dollars to walk! Thats all you ever hear about anymore is "We raised blah blah blah thousands of dollars for so and sos walk!!!!!" Like they need a boobie prize or something for recognition! Kats endo appt is in one week, i am going to talk with him about this. This is bullcrap, if what your saying is true and JDRF walks are free, then by God next yr Kat will walk for the first time.

We've been walking with the JDRF since Ryan was dx'd in 1998. Just to clear things up for you, the JDRF says that anyone raising $100 or more will receive a walk t-shirt. They never require you to raise "x amount" of money to participate. Start a team for Kat, even if you don't raise anything. Do it for her.
On another note, if you do start a team, its actually quite easy to get donations. When you sign up they give you a link for your personal fundraising page, you can just personalize that email and send it out to your address book. I bet'cha you can raise some $ in a week (actually its more like 2 weeks). But even if you don't raise a penny please start a team for Kat and walk...

Sounds like they've set a goal. JDRF does suggests that - and for instance you can't get a JDRF t-shirt unless you raise $100, but the amount doesn't matter!

We did not raise as much money this year, and we have never raised thousands and thousands - trust me. Personally I don't get hung up on the money part of it. Do what you can and feel good about it. Every penny helps. :)

At our walk, you could just go and walk - you wouldn't even have to register (but there is a disclaimer for health reasons should anyone have an accident or something). At our particular walk, there are no "gates" to get in. You could still go and even register that day give them a check for $5 or whatever and walk and feel good about it! :) Lots of hugs to you - it should all feel good, not bad in my opinion. :cwds::cwds:

I volunteer for our local JDRF walk. When we start planning the walk, they always say, we would love it if each person could raise $100. They of course know that in a perfect world, this would happen, but realistically know that for some it won't. They don't care, they want to see walkers out making a statement about JDRF and what they do for diabetes.

For each walker raising $100, you get a shirt. That's the only time a set $$ amount comes into play. I think it was tres tacky that the person stated that JDRF is asking for x amount of $$. Trust me, they are happy with whatever anyone can donate!

PLEASE, PLEASE get a team together! You do not need to raise anything, but try sending out an email, you may be pleasantly surprised!

Here's my take on it:D:

Not have your own team and donate whatever you can to the other team, stating that you can only afford x amount. They should respect that.

or

Have your own team and not donate to the other team.

or

Have your own team and donate a symbolic amount to the other team.

or

Suggest to the other team that you could have a "power team" (yours and theirs) and jointly raise funds.

IMO, take this opportunity and turn it for the best;)

JDRF walk are FREE... They ask each walker to set a goal of raising $100 (not paying it yourself). They suggest asking 10 people for $10 each.

We had another D child on our team this year. Our team was called Team Jessi, but our shirts represented Ryan also (the other D child). His mom raised the money in her name in honor of Ryan.

I just saw that you have a video...if you do send out an email send the link for that as well...it'll really pull at peoples' heartstrings and get them to dig deep into their pockets. :)

yep, I ditto what everyone else said.

one fundraising "tip" they give is to ask people for a specific amount of money. It works in some cases but it turns other people off. I pick and choose who I do this to. For instance, the other night I hit up a single friend of my brother - very good job, loads of disposable income so I said "Hey, Steve, would you like to walk with us on Sunday or would you like to give me a donation? Many of our friends are donating about $100 to Ian's team" He gave me $50. But the point is, if I hadn't said $100 he might have only given me $20. Now, on the other hand, my cousin who's dh is out of work she said "is it ok if I just bring $10?" and I told her not to bring a dime, just walk (and make us a pie for dessert - she makes great pies)'

but jdrf would be happy with $5 . It's really teh big corporate donors. IMO it's more important to have MANY walkers so that the big guns see that it is a worthwhile cause to support. If only 10 people show up for a walk, the big corporate sponsors will start pulling support.

There is no entry fee to walk in an ADA walk either. There is a suggested goal of $200 for your team when you first start a new team. You can adjust this number to be a personal goal, even if it is $0. We started out with a very small goal, but so many people have been so generous that I keep upping our goal every week. I'm not sure if there is a dollar amount before you get a t-shirt. A free t-shirt is not really our goal anyway - raising awareness, supporting the ADA, and being involved in something bigger than our family is our goal.

I think it was in poor taste for the other family to ask you for $100 to join their walk. They should have just extended the invitation to walk as an invitation to walk - not an invitation to donate money.

Please, please, please understand that you do not have to raise a cent to walk for the JDRF (or ADA for that matter). This woman worded her email that way to let people know that if they joined their team they'd be asking for their help with fundraising. Yes, each year the JDRF sets a goal to have each walker raise x amount of dollars, but that doesn't mean they are required to do so.

WE ARE NOT RICH!!! We raised $500 last year thru lots of asking and a few genorous donations. We still would have walked if we did'nt raise anything. We will be walking Sat in New Orleans without any donations. This is a last minute decision and did'nt have time to ask for $$$.

please, take Kat and walk this year, her own team.. you can registar the day of the walk, you don't need todo it on line.. Yes, JDRF asks everyone to raise $100.00 but they don't go after you if you don't.. show up, walk that day, have some fun!!! If you wanted to, you could ask family and friends if they'll like to donate a few dollars (or the amount they want to) to the walk.. even if Kat turned in $10, it goes towards a cure.. she doesn't need to be raising $1,000 or anything of the sort.. you don't need to turn in anymore for that matter.. its a day of fun.. go and have fun...get some ideas for next year.. :)
