Melinda's post about her son not taking his Ace inhibitor pills got me wondering....what the heck is this ? And are a lot of our children taking this ?
I have not heard of this prior to her post ......and I didn't want to hijack her post.
Can someone tell me more about this ?

My doctor has recently put me on one. He says it's for preventative measures. It is supposed to protect the kidneys, heart. etc. from getting damaged as quickly. I'm not one to take pills for anything (headache, pain), but he made a pretty good case towards taking them so I do.

They help to lower blood pressure by dilating vessels.
I was also told by my endo that it would be good to try to prevent/delay kidney related complications from my diabetes, but I refused. My average blood pressure is 90s/40s, and I didn't think that it needed to get any lower. And at this point, I've never had protein in my urine. For me, the risks of passing out from low blood pressure (started to put sugar there...) when I'm with my boys or trying to drive isn't worth the chance that it "might" help push kidney complications further down the road.

I asked about the blood pressure bit because I have always been on the lower side and I was worried about it getting any lower. I was told that it can bring blood pressure down, but if it's already low it's not going to make it lower.... and so far it hasn't had any affect on my blood pressure.
But of course, to each their own! ;)

No, I don't think so. It is usually prescribed for young adults/adults as a possible preventative measure. I've only heard of teens on this for having protein in the urine, I think.

That was one of the things that I had asked, too. I got a different answer from my endo, mostly that I would experience some lowering, but they didn't know how much. Since I'm sensitive to most medications (not just insulin), they couldn't predict how it would affect me. I wasn't just going to to on his word that it would work to help my kidneys, but I "might" have side effects, but they didn't know how bad they might be...I didn't trust that endo THAT much. ;)

Hi, it's Melinda from the original post. Cole has to take the inhibitors because he had a small amount of protein in his urine.

My son takes an Ace Inhibitor for microalbumin in his urine. It helps a little. His levels haven't gotten back to normal, but they aren't sky high either.

the official use of an ace inhibitor is to lower bp.
I just googled it and it does have an indication to help reduce progress of neuropathy and utilized in prevention of diabetic renal failure.
I wouldn't put my kid on the for "preventative" measures, however if there was a problem, I'd consider a low dose.
