If your young adult gets the flu shot, where does he/she get it? We don't have the on campus insurance. I guess I'll have him make an appointment at the practice he's been to near campus. Last year he made it home at one point, and it worked out last minute to get into his family physician here at home.
I just wondered how everyone else works the flu shot out when they're away?

Our dds aren't college age yet, but is he old enough to just go the the local pharmacy and get one? All of our pharmacies are offering them for $25-35. I checked the age requirement a couple years ago - can't remember if they have to be 18 or 21.
Another option - if you haven't already tried it.

There is a community clinic every year here, and they come to campus. It's $7. :)

Alex doesn't have the college health insurance (b/c he's on our insurance) but they sound like he can still get a flu shot with them. It will be $20 and I think they suggested we try to submit it to insurance for reimbursement.

My son doesn't have the college insurance but they give it free to all students anyway.
Most pharmacies are charging $35 this year, but there is an abundance of vaccines this year so I expect it will be easy to find a pharmacy with one available.
For my son who is away at another college, I have found a doctor on our insurance and made appointments for him over the phone then called and told him where to be and when. His college insurance is included in his tuition but refuses to go to the University Health Clinic.

Try calling some local pharmacies to the school? Here they give, around $30.00 (same as co-pay):cwds:

I'm a college student and I don't have my schools insurance either. I can still go into the health center and get a flu shot for 25$ though. It might be worth going into the health center and checking.

In Canada, they have flu shot clinics at local drug store’s, and you just give them your government health card, but I just wanted to point out that I believe they can deny you for liability reasons if you have a chronic medical condition i.e. type 1 d. the rational being that it has to be done under the supervision and guidance of a doctor, not just an RN at the flu shot clinic.

Last year, Beth went to the Student Health Center and they billed her Medicaid (her only ins. at the time). We were going to schedule her at the pediatrician when she was home (school is 400 miles away), but she had gotten the shot already.
She called me this week and told me Student Health had done a flu-shot clinic at the Student Union Building and she had gotten the shot. She has Group Health now and ages out of Medicaid at the end of this month. These and the Student Insurance are the only ones the Student Health Center can direct bill, so she was able to have it billed rather than pay the cash fee. They said that for other insurance she would need to seek re-imbursement from the insurer.
I'm not sure if she could have gone to a local doctor without changing her primary.

No help here Laurie. My son is a big fat baby when it comes to shots. He couldn't even be in the same room as Alli when she was first dx'd. He would get sick to his stomach. He threw a tantrum when he had to get the meningitis vaccine before entering college.

He ended up going to the family practice about a mile away where he goes when he's ill. He's fortunate to have access to a vehicle, but there is also a bus system.
Thanks everyone! :)
