Hi everyone, I'm new here. I realy just want anyone to me what they think. I have a feeling someting is going on wth my 16 month old son LAZ. I will start with, there is a family history of type 1 diabetes in my mothers family. For about the this past month I noticed that my son has been drinking and urinating a lot. I urination will fill a diaper completely. He drinks about a galllon of the motts tots or gatorade a day. He also eats his breakfast, lunch, and dinner however small portions. Two days ago I picked him up from daycare and he was completely aggrivated, crying, throwing things and tired. He finalyy fell asleep for about two hours and woke up and we assumed he didn't feel good (warm to the touch, letahrgic and clingy) I gave him a bottle of juice and he ate a little soup, within 30 min he completely normal. Running around, playing with my other two children happy and active. That night he woke up at least three times for something to drink and I changed his diaper 5 times. Yesterday he was fine but I still took him to his pediatrician. The rest of the day all I gave him was water to drink and of course his dinner and such. Last night he barely drank at all. This morning he woke up with a 101.0 fever and all he wanted was to eat the cream off the oreo cookies and to drink a bottle of juice. Within 45 min his fever went down however still tired. I went then to the lab for his urinalysis and blood work that his Dr. ordered from yesterday. Now he is resting. What do you think? Has anyone else had this experience with the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes> Results won't be in until at least Monday. Not sure what to do in the mean time about his diet.
Thanks for listening.

I don't understand why the results will take so long. Those symptoms sound a lot like my son when he was 2 and diagnosed.
I would take him back and ask for a finger poke and a urine dip in the office. They should be able to tell you immediately if there is an immediate danger. We went to the lab and had our pediatrician calling us by the time we got home to go to the hospital immediately.

I agree. Same here. We were diagnosed immediately while still in the pediatricians office with a urine dip stick and 2 finger pokes.
You can buy the urine glucose strips at the pharmacy. You can put cotton balls in the diaper and then squeeze on to the strip to check for glucose in the urine. If it is positive, call your doctor immediately.

Thanks for replying. I asked the Dr. yeaterday to do that but he said he doesn't do any type of tests like that in his office and to go to the lab. This morning at the lab I asked them as well but they claimed to be just a draw station and they don't do that as well. So the specimen needs to be sent out and tested. My husband thinks i'm over reacting so he doesn't want to purchase the ones they sell over the counter in the pharmacy, but I know something isn't right.

It can get really dangerous really fast. Your husband would feel awful if he could have saved your son's life for $10.

I know I'm just going to do it any way b/c I can't wait until Monday. Right now my son is just lying on the sofa with no energy and a fever of 101.0 I don't know what elses to do.

The drinking and urinating are big red flags. The irritabilty and lethargic behavior - red flags. The fever is not a direct red flag. However, a virus is sometimes the cause of "pushing the limit" on a symptomatic person. As in - they were beginning to show signs and the virus caused the pancreas beta cells to go waywire real fast.
This can go from mild reoccurring symptoms to terribly ill in a matter of hours. I would go to the pharmacy and buy Ketodiastix combination strips which check for glucose (sugar) and ketones over the counter $10 - $15.
If either is positive, call the ped. dr or just head to the ER.
P.S. Waiting until Monday could be detrimental. A quick non-invasive test by using cotton balls in the diaper would at least bring a little peace of mind for the weekend.

ANY doc office should be able to tell you whether or not your son is spilling ketones. It's a fast urine strip test. I'm surprised they couldnt do that for u. I hope it's NOT D, but if it is...you've found a wonderful support forum!

My son was dx'd just after turning 2 and these symptoms sound very familier. He was peeing a ton and drinking a ton -- waking up in the middle of the night asking for a drink. Then he got very lethargic. He never had a fever though. His pediatrician did a quick BG check on his finger and told us that he had diabetes and sent us straight to the ER. I'd would think that any office would be able to perform a BG check and dip his urine too, for that matter. I hope that it is not diabetes, but I wouldn't put it off. Go with your gut feeling. I'd call the doctor again tomorrow and let them know that something needs to be done before the weekend. I still wish that I would have noticed the signs sooner. Best wishes to you and your little one.

This sounds SO familiar from Zane's diagnosis. I would head straight to the ER if I were you. I wish we did not wait as long as we did.
Let us know how things progress.

You have worked so hard to get these lab tests for your son, and they want you to wait til Monday?
Don't, pack for the hospital now and go. The hospital can have your lab work done right then and do a blood glucose in seconds. You're not being over reactive , you're being proactive and protective. Tell me them that there is family history of type 1. If you browse the CWD forums you will find exactly the same kind of symptoms at diagnosis with other type 1 little ones, even some who had fever, too. A 16 mo. old can go downhill fast; this is life threatening.

I agree with the others. D in young children happens so fast. You are right to be concerned. We are all thinking of you and waiting to hear. (((HUGS)))
