Hi All
I have sought out this forum due to a scary school experience last week. My 4yr old daughter has been diagnosed with diabetes type 1 for just two months and she has just started school as well. Last week when I picked her up from school she was so distressed and crying and the teacher told me she was tired. I checked her blood then and there on the playground and her reading was 2.4. When I got her home and settled I talked to her about it and she told me that she had told the teacher she was hungry but the teacher said she hadn't got any food for her! I have taken a "hypo-box" into the school, for such emergencies. I have kept my daughter off school today and I'm waiting to hear from the head teacher about when I can go and see her - do you think I have done the right thing??
This is all sooooo new for us, school, diabetes etc. I'm floundering!

Hi , i think you have done the right thing . Did the teacher know about the hypo box ? silly question i know . I cant understand why the teacher didnt give her something to eat or even check her blood sugar . Does she have an afternoon snack ? I think i would have gone in straight away and seen the head teacher and the teacher straight away . Jake's school is great with dealing with diabetes . When your daughter went bk to school after being diagnosed did her diabetes nurse go in for a meeting with her teachers and head teacher ?
There is also a thread which is on the uk forum posted by stillmamamia , it is the UK Diabetes association , Education Advocacy pack , this is also very helpful . I would just like to welcome you to CWD . At times the Uk forum can be quiet so , you might want to post on the children with diabetes forum . Take care and please let me know how you got on at school .

Hi Sorry to hear that your daughter had such a bad expirence at school. Has the diabetes nurse been into school and given education on what to do? Will the school do blood tests? Do you have a care plan in place? I think you were right to keep her off school until the school until things have been sorted out.
Do you have list of hypo symptoms etc

Thanks to all for your replies.
Yes we have done everything. We have had meetings at school with DSN and the teachers at least two of which can do the blood monitoring). We have gone through treatment of hypos with advice on how to treat. My daughter wears a medical alert wristband with my phone number etc on for quick reference, the blood glucose monitoring equipment and the hypo-box are all kept in the classroom. So we don't know why she was refused food!!
I have a meeting at the school with teachers and head on Wednesday, really interested to know what they'll say!
So glad I found this forum, knowing others in the same situation really really helps.
Thank you all so much.

Hi Carla
I dont usually post a lot on here because I run the CWD UK email forum and dont always have time to be in two places at once so to speak.
There are lots parents on the email forum who are having the same sort of problems as you. This last year I have been badgering diabetes UK to do something about the schools problems and I have written document on the problems with schools which I have sent to various people. Hopefully the school problem is being slowly addressed. However I guess there will always be teething problems. We usually have problems where schools wont do blood tests or help with injections. So its surprising that they have agreed to all that and then to have ignored hypo symptoms. They should have tested. Does a learning support assistant do the tests or the teacher.
Have a look here about how to sign up for the email forum where you can get advice from the other parents who are in the same position as yourself. If you want to subscribe I can do so for but it does means lots of emails.

Hi Carla, welcome to the site, my name is Sue, my Daughter was Diagnosed wen she was 5 and had just started a new class with new teacher. we found when she went to school she needed a snack at playtime on a morning and a snack at 2pm, the school were not very supportive at first so I put a small digital watch around the handle of her snack bag and put the alarm on for 2pm every day. when she heard the alarm she new it was time for her snack. the teacher would tell her to get it and eat it. my DD was afraid to eat at first because she made a noise in the classroom, the teacher asked the rest of the class if they would like to bring a piece of fruit to eat at the same time, she also had some herself.
you could try the watch on her bag, that helped us ot loads.
