Chandra, How scarey! My in laws live in Hederson NV (Near Vegas) We have ran into snakess, lizards, and huge bugs before, but we haven't seen a scorpian yet. It must have been really scarey. Charlize did a great job, so did hubby. I would probably freak out. Glad you guys kept your cool.

Oooooh, I HATE scorpions. We don't get them at our house so much because we're right in the middle of town in a 40year old neighborhood; no vacant lots or things like that to give them places to live (Chandra's out west farther, in the newer areas, where there are still more places for the little buggers...)
My in-laws live in the foothills in Tucson, not far from a wash, and it's all natural desert landscaping around them. When Meghan was about 4, she went into the bathroom and said, "Mommy, look at this big ant." It was a scorpion on the floor behind the toilet    .....I called out, "Graaaaaandpaaaaa, could you come here PLEEEEEASSSSSEE!!!" trying not to freak out. His reply? Oh, it's just a little one - not to worry about it! Yeah, right.
YUUUUUUUCK. I don't like roaches, and I can do without spiders, but scorpions? I want to be in an entirely different time zone from them!:D

Oh thank god she came and got you!! My parents live in Laughlin and their business is in Bullhead City and when I go out there to visit, we see them and they are nasty ugly dangerous things! I'd be proud of her too! What a smart girl!! Jennifer

My in-laws have been stung several times by scorpions - in a towel, slipping a foot into a shoe or slipper, even under the bedcovers once!!
Funny, though, my MIL never told ME that....I heard it through a friend of mine who sat and chatted with her at one of my kids' birthday parties! My friend was living in a new house that backed up onto state (desert) land, and was worried about the scorpions she kept seeing.
I guess as long as you don't have a bad reaction to the sting, it's not much worse than a bug bite, but I would REALLY rather not find out!!!
:D
PS The smaller they are, the more poisonous, so watch out for the little ones the most!

Chandra, is there anything to repell them safely? Or poison the ones in your yard? Could the exterminator help out with this? Sounds so scarey. I am so glad non of you were bitten.

Yep, bark ones are the worst ones....nasty little varmints.
There isn't really anything that an exterminator can do to kill them; unless you spray directly on them, they generally won't die. The best thing is to make sure ALL holes, cracks, etc into the house are filled up - then they can't get in. My DH's parents told me that if you have ANYTHING up against the house - landscaping, rocks, etc, - it gives them somewhere to live. Piles of wood for the fireplace, stuff like that - all should be away from the base of the house.
Some people say that DE (diatomaceous earth, stuff that goes in some pool filters) sprinkled around the outside of the house and where they might like to get in will keep them away; I guess it's really rough and can cut up their underbellies/insides if they ingest it.
All this is stuff my DH and his parents have told me, since they dealt with them all these years. I keep telling my hubby that being a city rat, my idea of "wildlife" is pigeons and roaches....yucky enough in their own right, but at least they don't sting!

Yikes! We don't have to worry about scorpions...in Ontario...just bears! I have had nightmares about bears! Of course I have only seen one but I know they are out there! :)

Its things like this make me glad to live in New Zealand. We've only got one type of poisonous spider and thats not found very much only on the coast. Not in built up areas. And one other spider that can cause bad reactions in some people but not everyone.
