View Full Version : Precision Ketone Meter question
Question for those here in the US...Was this something you needed a prescription for? Did your insurance cover it? Where did you buy it? THere doesn't seem to be a whole lot of info out there about it!

Last time we went and saw our CDE I mentioned it, and she just gave me one.

Our endo office gave me the meter. However, my insurance does not cover the strips. At $50/box of 10:eek:
The nurse said to get her my insurance info and she would she what she could do.

No perscription needed unless you want your insurance to cover it. The strips are terribley expensive though.

I, too got a meter from my endo ....I order 3 month supply of all our prescriptions thru mail..... I DID NOT realize how expensive the strips are....even with insuarnce,.....they cost more than the other items.....and since I don't use them that often....I've now got a TON of strips now !! If I had known I would have NOT ordered them thru mail and stuck with pharamacy...oh well...live & learn.....

Since I have such a young child, in diapers, I appealed my insurance company and they now cover the cost of the Ketone Blood strips. It took some work on my part, but I am glad I did it. I go through those strips at a rapid pace when we are sick!!! I also don't hesitate to check, ever, when I am in doubt!!!
I believe that we have basis to appeal due to the fact that our kids are young...even if they aren't in diapers. They can decline very RAPIDLY. The blood ketone meter has kept us out of the hospital many times. The ketones in urine are hours old and aren't an accurate portrayal of what is happening "real time".
Do your research and put together a letter for your insurance company, along with a note from your doctor documenting medical necessity. this just might work for you like it did for us...
Hope I helped...

You can usually get the meter for free but the strips are around $40 for a box of 10. I use them sparingly! I do the regular urine ketone strips and use these if I have a known problem or if it is at night. If he threw up I'd pull them out - that sort of thing.
If anyone has extra strips there is quite a market for them on ebay. Just list the exp. date. They are over the counter so not considered prescription medication I would think.

Once opened do these have an expiration like the bg strips and urine ketostix? Do you need to use it in a month?
I just read there is only 10 in a vial. That probably means it isn't an issue.

They come individually wrapped...so you just have to pay attention to the expiration date...

We got one from our CDE and one from our Endo. The companys just give them out so we can leave one at school and one at home. Our CDE also just gave us several boxes of strips which was great!! They don't have a lot of clients that use them, so they like to give them out so they can get more from the company! We did buy some more from our mail order company, and I think I paid less than $4 for a box...since our insurance company will pick up most of the cost if we use a certain mail order supply place. I am going to get a BUNCH of boxes now that I have met my out of pocket maximum for the year and I won't have to pay anything!!!
