Our plan consists of call if problems. I want more defined guidelines for sick days. I remember reading in the pink panther book that the endo team should give you a sick day plan. So is your sick day plan more substaintal then check for ketones, check bg more frequently and give more liquids? Do you think it is becasue he is a toddler?

I feel like the quaterback out in the game when the coach forgot to give me the playbook. The team being on the sidelines and me calling a timeout every once in awhile is handy but having to go to them for a play by play is exhausting. :( And I don't even like football.

Check B/G 2 hrs, raise insulin levels as needed, check for ketones, give lots of non calorie drinks, Call if ketones are large.

I usually call anyways, hoping there is some majical thing they can tell me to do to make the b/g's normal, and the ketones go away, but they usually tell me to do just what I am doing.

We got sgheet of paper that had this

No vomitingh BS > 240 moderate to large ketones
No Vomiting BS < 240 moderate to large ketones
Vomitingh BS > 240 moderate to large ketones
Vomiting BS > 240 no ketones
Vomiting BS <240 moderate to larghe ketones
Vomiting BS < 240 No ketones

Each row had 4 colums of directions Time of Scheduled Insuin, Not time for scheduled insulin, checking BS and fluids

I would think because you are so newly dx'd and Adin is so young perhaps they just want you to call.

We weren't given sick day instructions exactly either. I go by the advice in the Pink Panther book and what others said - raise the insulin levels, check ketones, etc. I have not had the situation yet where he is throwing up. I think it gets more complicated anytime they are throwing up - you have to get carbs into them and insulin to keep the ketones out which might mean a short hospital stay.

It is the ketones that you really have to worry about I think. When William gets sick and had moderate to large ketones I usually call the pedi endo. I like to give her a head's up and get some advice.

The Precison Xtra blood ketone meter is very useful. Our insurance doesn't cover the strips (about $40 for a box of ten). It gives you a real time reading of ketones and is like doing a bg check. Especially useful for overnight checks if you suspect a problem.

We were given very specific instructions for sick day management:

correction factors every 3-4 hours for bg over 250 with moderate to large ketones; drinking fluids constantly with a chart for ounces per hour per weight of child; monitor bg every 2-3 hours day and night; test of ketones with every urination even if bg is normal or low; go to ER if persistent vomiting and/or diarrhea and unable to keep fluids down, bg is less than 80 with moderate to large ketones, or persistent moderate to large ketones for more than 6-8 hours; and of course to call them daily, if not more often as needed.

We "sailed through" 3 years of D....and little to no worry about sick days....I had read all of the stuff and felt prepared.....but until we had our first real bad episode.....didn't understand how scary or out of control things could be.

I think all sick days are different.....so would be hard to have a "solid plan"...I think the best plan is to check BS's every 2 hours, and the same with ketones....DO NOT HESITATE to call your doctor NO MATTER WHAT TIME IT IS !!

Yoiur childs demenour will tell you a lot as well.....
