Julia has had some pretty bad headaches for a while now. Last Dec. she had a bad headache, but never took her in because it went away quickly, and was easily treatable with childrens advil.
The headaches got worse, and more often around the time she was dx'd, in fact it was a symptom the night she was dx'd. I was told in the hospital not to worry about it, that it was probably just because her b/g had stablized, and she might be feeling low. We have been going on the asumtion that her headaches have been diabetes related ever since, well until halloween morning. On halloween she had the mother of all headaches, which when I could understand her through her sobs sounded like a migraine. She wasn't very discrptive at the time. Anyways I called the doc, and they couldn't get us in until today. Our doc gave me the choice of trying a med or going to the nuroligest, and I asked her if it were her child, what would she choose. She is sending us to the nuro, she thinks it is probably a food allergy, but she said it could be a number of things. Well, after reading what I have on the subject it could be anything from an allergy, to a brain tumor.
Now comes the question. Does anyone elses small child have migraines, and if so is it anything D related?
I am so scared, and I can't even speak it out loud right now without crying. I know allergies are bad, and you have to deal with them, but out of all of the things it could be I really hope that is what it is, if it is anything.
Thanks for listening. Jamie

Has the endo checked her thyroid levels? How about celiac antibodies?

Hi Jamie,
I am sorry to hear about the headaches and that you are so worried:( . I understand and would feel the same way as you do. Mia generally gets headachy when she runs high (or low) BGs or when she drops quickly from high to low. I think it is a good idea to get her checked out if you cannot see a pattern in her headaches.
I wish I had better advice for you but please don't worry too much. Worrying doesn't make the headaches go away:( . Just follow your doctor's advice and don't let up until you find the cause of them. I hope they find the cause (and a fix) for Julia's headaches soon!!

Thyroid, and celiac tests were done this past Feb. Is it possible that they were missed at the time of testing?

Thanks for the support Marisa, worrying is my specialty as a mom :cwds: I am trying not to though. It is giving me a headache. I hope they find, and treat whatever it is, too.

Have you had her eyes checked. My son was having bad headaches and had his eyes checked and needed glasses for awhile. I'm not saying that it is as simple as that, but it might be good to rule it out. This may sound strange, but does she seem stressed, I have a friend who's 6, 9 and 13 yr olds all get very bad headaches when they are worried, and yes little ones do worry, as I am sure you know.
Does she have an appoinment with the neurologist yet? I'm glad you are finding he cause behind them instead of just taking the medicine.
I hope you get in soon so you can relax. Sometimes I think all of the information available to us is not always a good thing. I just scared the begeebies out of myself about some tests I had done last week. I called for the results yesterday and everything is fine. I'm not dying!! Just kidding, but that was about where I was bringing myself.
Try not to worry too much.

We did eyes in March, I belive. It was after dx, that is for sure. That is a good thing to look at though.
Our insurance requires preaproval, since our appointment was late with the pedi we wont have an appointment with the nero until tomarrow. I hope they get us in fast, too.
I belive we have to much info too. I both love, and hate google. I wouldn't know half of what I do about various things without it, but when it is medical, boy it can get scarey. BTW, NEVER EVER visit wrongdiagnosis.com. That is the scariest website you could ever visit!!!
Thanks for the suggestions, and support.

Long story, but it's applicable.
My non-D kid woke up one morning in absolute agony. Couldn't even talk. Wife and I thought it was viral meningitis, for sure. He presented as if he read the symptoms from a textbook. Coudn't even walk - had to carry him to the car. Doc-In-The-Box (urgent care place) says "Holysmokes, this looks like meningitis (no duh, lady) and says that they have no lab, so no spinal tap, and get him to the ER pronto.
By the time ER doc looks at him, he's fine. Chipper. Enjoying playing with all the gizmos and whatnot. Pure and simple migrane. I get em, wife gets them, non-D kid gets them. D kid is fine. Point: Migraines DO happen in children, and 99% of the time it's benign.
As others said, D related indicates vision. High BG blurs vision, and if your child needs corrective lenses, it makes it worse. Headaches follow. My sister had it, and my D kid does get vision-related headaches from high BG.
I sincerly hope you and your daughter turn out fine.

I hope it's nothing more then a blip, and am trying to not worry, or google. I did just google it again a little while ago, and found my post! How strange can you get to look for information, and find yourself in that mess. As I am reading I am finding that chances are it is just migraines, or possible eye damage. Hope we find out! Thanks for the shared knowledge :cwds:

I was actually diagnosed with migraines when I was 2, and have battled them my whole life. You can DEFINITELY get migraines as a child.
Even now, after almost 30 years of getting them, I'll still occasionally have a particularly nasty, vicious one that's worse than anything in recent memory, and I'll find myself worrying that it's a tumor. It's a natural worry, even when we KNOW better, so I can completely understand your fear when you're dealing with the unknown. I can tell you, though, from my many discussions with doctors and neuros, that headaches that come and go - no matter how bad - with periods of relief in between often indicate that it's very likely NOT a tumor. Tumors, when they reach a stage where they cause pain, will then typically advance to a stage where the pain is continuous. By the time they cause pain, they are also very likely to cause other symptoms as well. I just mention this as it *might* help you to know - maybe it will ease your worry a little in the interim until your appointment?
In the event that it is migraines, I can tell you from first-hand experience that they have some very good medications these days - I get migraines about twice a month, but they don't sideline me the way they used to thanks to the medication I take when I can feel one starting.
I hope that everything goes well and you get some answers soon - waiting is the worst!! Odds are that everything is OK, though, and whatever is causing this is something that can be taken care of - so try to stay positive (and definitely avoid Google if you can! I could convince myself that I have any number of horrible diseases if I spend enough time researching the symptoms!)

Susan, Thanks. You eased my mind a bit. It is good to know that it more then likely isn't a tumor.
The doc did say that sometimes it is allergies. I get migraines, too. I think mine are more hormone related, though. I didn't start mine until adulthood, and to be honest I didn't even think that a child could have a migraine, but there was no other way to explain the headaches other then migraine like when I took Julia in. I have however found some pretty good articles that basically say what you just said, so it is really helping to ease that worry. Because she is my baby, and it is in my nature I will worry until I get a clean bill of health for her, however it wont be as bad of a worry, thanks to all of the support everyone has given, and the information that sometimes a migraine is just that, a migraine.
Thanks again for your knowledge, and expirience. That is what is so cool about this board. There is a ton of support, knowledge, and expirience!
