Hi all
Charlotte has been on 4 times a day insulin for 6 weeks now...she was on twice a day...she has novorapid and lanctus ...after a stable first 2 weeks she was u p and down still...one day great other days too high or too low...this 4 times a day was meant to reduce the 'hypos' she was having and the 'highs' ...so why for the last 3 days has she been way too high in late teens and early 20's(uk readings) and tonight after her tea and an apple she is a 21.6:eek:
I dont understand it some days...seems the same thing is happening as she was on the twice daily...what goes on with this bloody illness!!!
Sorry makes me so mad some days...i want to shout and scream and go back a yr when she didnt have this dreaded diabetes:confused:
Every day is different isnt it? And as hard as i try to keep her stable she can just go high for no reason:mad: ...why why why i dont like it or want it and it makes me mad

I am sorry you are having such a hard time getting it all sorted out. I have been there, and it isn't fun to say the least.
Julia is on lantus, and novolog, I assume they are similar to what you are using. Lantus is a 24 hr insulin, and novolog is rapid.
Are you carb counting? Does she wake up high, or low? Is she high, or low after meals? Are you keeping in daily, or weekly contact with diabetes team? It took us a few months to get Julia's insulin proper, and it is always changing. Most of the time when we see highs, and lows both it means one insulin is to high, and the other is to low of a dose, so we have to change it up a bit. We make changes one at a time, so that we can see the results for that change. You really have to be a detective to figure out what needs to be done. You have to look at what time insulin is given, we do lantus at bed so that we can see in the morning from her fasting b/g what her lantus is doing. You have to think, are they growing? Is the rapid insulin lasting longer then the food that is eaten? Are you dosing before, or after a meal? tons of stuff. These aren't all, just some ideas of where to start looking. Also call your endo, and ask for help. That is why we pay them the big bucks:D
Good luck, I hope you can get it sorted out. Jamie

Without seeing her daily numbers and going by the fact that you say she's always high, I'd look into upping the Lantus to try to even out the spikes a bit more. You mentioned 21.6 after her tea and apple... How much time "after" was she 21.6 and when was the last injection before it? It could be that the "fast carbs" she got from the apple (don't know how many carbs are in tea) was too fast for the insulin to catch up.... And it's totally normal, depending on the timing of the carb intake and the injections, that she'll go to 21.... Just as long as she doesn't stay there. It's all part of the roller coaster of trying to levels of carbs vs. insulin.

Hi Lyn,
Remember too that Charlotte's dosage will need to be increased every once in a while as she grows and her honeymoon ends. You'd expect it to sneak up gradually, but with my son Aaron it seems like every once in a while everything starts jumping unexpectedly high rather suddenly. Sometimes that coincides with some big change -- like last time, the beginning of summer -- that you think at first might account for it (and sometimes there is something like that -- an brewing illness, a lazy nonactive day, Mars in alignment with Jupiter -- that is wonking up the numbers). But sometimes we struggle away, and eventually realize he just needs more insulin now. Change all the doses, and it's all good again.
Good luck!

Hi
Thanks for your replies:)
Jamie...yes the insulin is the same 24 hour and fast acting..she is high after meals..we are trying to carb count in the last 2 weeks...she is starting to wake up higher in the mornings...but saying that today she was a 4..so nearly a hypo:eek:
We do the lanctus the same time as her dinner one...the nurse said to do this...2 together...and we do it before she eats and then check her 2 hours later before bed
..thanks for you advice xx
Emmas dad...She was 21 about an hour and a half after her tea and insulins and this morning she was only a 4 ...cant make it out some days lol thanks for your reply
Holly...thanks for your advice...its actually turned very cold here in the last couple of days so maybe that has affected her levels too...i will see how she goes today
Thanks again this is a great forum very supportive and lots of advice im glad to have found you xx:)

You're welcome Lyn. It could be a delayed reaction too. I remember just a couple weeks ago, about 2.5 hours after breakfast, we tested her and she was 19. So we were like, ok, we won't give her her snack this morning. 30 minutes later she was down to 2. She repeated this pattern for about 3 days before getting back to normal. Just these things that happens to keep us on our toes.

Remember that the short acting insuling (novolog...or humalog or whatever) starts working in about 15 minutes, peaks in about an hour but is still working for about 3 hours...So you may be testing too soon at just an hour after meals...especially if you are injecting right before she begins eating.
Hang in there...the carb counting gets easier. And this regimen with more shots (MDI) actually gets much better results in the long run. You may be having issues because Charlotte (love her name, btw...LOL) is honeymooning still...I hope it all settles down...but if I know D, it will get crazy again eventually...
Good luck...
