Well, it really depends on what type of diabetes you have, and also how you and your doctor are controlling your diabetes.

With all the wonderful new advances in diabetes today - diabetics can have chocolate and any other sugar sweets like anyone else. Now, i say this - but I also say this with caution. It is up to your discretion - because I (and MANY others) have found that certain candies do certain bad things to blood sugars - and it's better to just avoid them. Also, it's just to be healthy in general too, to avoid eating a lot of sugary foods.

Again, you should talk to your doctor about this. I don't know anything about substance chocolate - but I do know that depending on how you're controlled - it is ok to eat a little bit.

Hope this helps. Have a great day!

Cocoa works much better than chocolate, much easier on the sugars! If you can find out if something is made with cocoa rather that pure chocolate, go for that. Tastes just as good without paying for it later! :D

I'm not sure what you mean by substance chocolate.

There are all sorts of chocolate out there some made with different sweeteners (although you have to watch how much you eat of this because it does cause the runs in some people), but most is made with sugar. Dark chocolate in most cases has less sugar than milk chocolate. You also have to look at the other ingredients involved in the multitudes of chocolate bars out there.

Your best bet when eating any kind of candy is to try and work it into your meal plan by carb counting and compensating for it somehow - extra exercise, extra insulin, etc. I think you can find the carb count on most packages (here anyhow) or online.

Cocoa is the basis for all chocolate. If you are making hot chocolate you can use plain unsweetened cocoa in milk and use a artificial sweetener so you only have to count the carbs of the milk and a couple for the cocoa (most unsweetened cocoa is 10.5 carbs per 100 grams).

I always try to work chocolate in my diet somewhere, although I cannot remember the last time I ate a whole chocolate bar. I usually stick to the snack/treat size. Have fun and enjoy (with care and consideration - sorry I had to throw that in because I am a mom too).

By cocoa I mean like...take cookies for example. Some are made my melting chocolate and using that to get the chocolate flavor. Others use cocoa. Some resturants use cocoa in their shakes instead of chocolate. I guess I'm talking like powder cocoa. If you can substitute cocoa for chocolate in your recipies, it's much better on the blood sugar. It's also usually listed on food labels.

My son eats chocolate in all forms, cookies, ice cream, pancakes and even hunks of Valrhona Manjari (we buy in bulk). There's a high fat content in some chocolates so keep that in mind when taking insulin.

Chocolate bars are a treat I'm continuing with. I've found two very acceptable dark chocolate bars made by Eat Well Be Well... diabetic friendly in the sense that these are sugar-free, and are sweetened with Splenda (none of the nortorious sugar alcohols). Moderation is key - the fat content could prove a problem if one were to eat too many.

I've been to Belgium, Switzerland and France many times (mostly on business). I've enjoyed a lot of VERY FANCY chocolate items, both as gifts and as "let's show the American how grateful we are" expense account dinner treats. I've visited many purveyors in famous Belgian towns.

I usually just gobble Trader Joe's "Pound Plus" 72% dark, which is OK. But I do like the good stuff. Oddly, I just compared the Valrhona 71% version with a couple of other bars, side by side. To my nose, which *IS* well trained, the "fruitiness" which they claim on the package just isn't there. It does have a distinctly red COLOR, but hardly any flavor of "berries" or "raisins" or "citrus". Compared to some others, It's merely strong and smokey.

I like Venezuelans. The Spanish company Chocovic has a nice bar, "Ocumare". And of course the Italians (Amedei) have completely taken over the best plantation, Chuao, and I can't afford it... but it *IS* the best.

of using chocolate and cane sugar exclusively, dumping soy lecithin from the ingredients list. It's remarkable how much better the bars taste when you leave out that junk.

Now, I have another item to add to my Trader Joe's shopping list. ;) love that grocery store!

If you want a seriously good bar, Trader Joe's own "luxury" 3 oz. is VERY good. (Shiny purple design on the wrapper, IIRC.) It is one of the new-style "no-added-soy" products. A little sweet for my taste, but very nice.

Trader Joe's usually has a couple of Valrhona varieties, as well as Chocovic. They also have Scharfenburger, but the stuff in those wrappers has gone to heck since Hershey bought 'em... now it tastes like Hershey's

Thank you, Rick :D

DH had some business in Vegas; so he went to Trader Joes, afterward. It's Pound Plus for dessert at dinner tonight. :D He looked for the "luxury" but that location must have run out of stock.... there's always next time. :D

They're gonna have the Lindt 85%. It doesn't have the 'particular' flavor which you get in the single-origin kinds Ellen and I both prefer, but compared to almost anything else it's AWESOME.
