I have encouraged my son to pre-bolus, but he doesn't share my enthusiasm for it. :D

You know when we moms and dads (and endos) have ideas for this age group our adult kids really are adults. They do what they want and should!

So, I think I've mentioned the pre-bolusing 2 or 3 times. I really need to zip my mouth at this point. I hope I can. Anyone else have trouble with this? Help! :p I don't want to be the diabetes police. My son really does an awesome job at caring for himself.

Yep - sure did have that problem. I casually asked the endo about it at one of the appointments and he drew pictures and graphs all over the white paper on the exam table. Helped Steven when he saw it in visual from a great dr who talks to him like an adult.

For the most part he does pre-bolus now.

By the way - Steven has been off the pump now for a little over a week and is doing MDI. He did say this helped remind him to test more often and pre-bolus since he actually has to do a shot. He is enjoying freedom from not being connected to something for 24 x 7 but says it is a hastle to carry around the insulin and it is so hot in Vegas he has to make sure he keeps it cool. He figures he will take the break for another week and go back on thepump when school starts. I am very glad he is at least has options and thinks them through.

At that age it is important to be extremely careful about pre-bolusing. Circumstances can prevent the plan from working. For example, we had an incident of pre-bolusing before leaving the YMCA and heading home for dinner but we were stopped by a LONG train and traffic. Normally the timing would have been perfect. Please be careful!

I always do an extended bolus, seldom pre bolus, except to start my bolus just as I start eating or with in 5 minutes, works like a charm, I'd crash if I prebolused like some suggest.

Yep, prebolusing hasn't been a big sell with Aaron either. I think at this age they just feel they have enough to do with diabetes without having to preplan every meal. Prebolusing in the morning (when it would really help) would require FUNCTIONING earlier than the very last minute possible... not going to happen.

I just focus on all the stuff he does handle so well, and tell myself that he may want to "fine-tune" this more once he's at a more settled stage of life. I do try to remember to suggest he test a little ahead of when a meal is ready so he can at least get a correction going if he's high... but fairly often at this age he's walking in the door a few minutes before dinner so even that doesn't work out very often.

LOL! Our kids must all live by the same motto! I think Matt allows himself a whole 15 minutes to wake up, shower, eat and pack up everything he needs for the day. Can't prebolus before that shower, so it just doesn't happen.

Connor never preboluses so I've given up the speeches.

One should NEVER take insulin before getting in a car in anticipation of food.
