View Full Version : Has Anyone Used the Cozmo Software?

My son is on the Cozmo insulin pump and I am debating buying the infrared cord that allows you to use the software that comes with the pump. I'd like to know if the $50 for the cord is worth it :). What are your experiences with the software? By the way, we do not use the CozMonitor glucometer that goes with it (and we don't plan on using it). Thanks for your input.

I think Smith's should GIVE YOU the infrared port - there shouldn't be a charge. Speak to your rep about it.

Our rep was clear when we got the pump that the infrared cord does not come with it. I have also contacted Smith's medical and they have said the same thing. When I asked why they don't include it with the pump (since they do include all of the software), the woman I spoke to didn't know. She said even people she works with at Smith's Medical were asking the same question.

I've got one, kinda bad luck tho, dosent run properly on my computer, so i gotta use the software at my buddy's house. personally, i think it's worth it, it allows you to make various changes quick and easy, and let's you custom name alot of alarms. it's nice, pull up your program on the screen, make any changes you want, and load it right to your pump.

Something else to consider, the cable is just that, an infrared cord. if you have say a laptop with infrared capabilities, i don't see why you couldent use that to communicate with your pump. similarley, wouldent it be possible to pick something up from a computer supply store for cheaper and use that? just some ideas to consider looking into.

Thank you, Rob for your help. My friend came over and looked at my laptop and showed me the infrared port on the side! I had no idea it was there  I installed the software tonight and was able to communicate between the pump and software perfectly!! Thanks again -- I'm sure glad I didn't go out and buy the $50 cord!!

Glad to be of assistance :D . Smith's dosen't seem to be too giving with that kind of information (and at $50 a cord, I wonder why...).

Smiths Medical in New Zealand is providing the infra red cable free of charge.:o

You mentioned your pump came with a glucometer. Why aren't you using it? will it provide a dose to deliver to the pump?

The Cozmo software is quite tricky to use, but I think I'm getting it sorted :-)
You must have the IR cable installed BEFORE you open the Cozmanager software.
I find it easiest if one of the kids and I sit at the computer in complete darkness. The kid gets down on the floor with the IR adapter and the pump - and tries to get the connection while I sit at the computer waiting to leap in and get the upload/download done while things are happening - its hit and miss, sometimes takes us a good 20 mins or more - and then you've got to remember to bolus for the the missed basal etc - fun and games LOL.

The Cozmo pump does come with the "cozmonitor" that attaches directly to the pump. We don't use the cozmonitor simply because it's hard to get a 5 year old boy to hold still long enough to get the pump out of his pump pouch, load the test strip, wait for it to turn on, and then test him. It's much easier to just have the regular glucometer all ready and then just poke Carson and he can run off and play. It's also hard to use the cozmonitor at night -- especially if Carson is sleeping on his pump -- we would have to roll him over and wake him up.

If you don't use the cozmonitor, the pump will prompt you to manually enter in what Carson's blood sugar is -- we like doing that instead. There's nothing wrong with the cozmonitor, it just doesn't quite work for a 5 year old who thinks he's a Star Wars Jedi Knight all the time :)

My son doesn't use the cozmonitor because he doesn't want to have to take a meter case out (with strips and lancet device) from one pocket in addition to the pump from another pocket. What if he doesn't need a correction? SIGH. As much as I think it would be helpful to have all the data in one place, it's not a battle I want to wage. He checks regularly with his meter. If he needs a correction, he'll enter the info manually. He also finds the pump too bulky with the attached meter.

BTW, we've been thrilled with the Cozmo. His A1C's have never been better. He was on an old Disetronic for 8 years prior to getting the Cozmo.

It may be a 'little' bit late for your decision, but to my experience the pump works fine with "standard" IR Ports. I'm reading it successfully from an IBM Thinkpads builtin IR Port. While it's a bit inconvenient to hold the pump in place in front of the IR Port during the data exchange, it works reliably.

On a side note - the data is written to a MS Access database, so while the reports generated by the pump software are a bit far from stellar, it's possible to generate own reports, or export the data to other software which does a better job at generating graphics or other printouts.

One software worth mentioning in this context is SiDiary, which is able to import the data from the database. I'm assuming that the english localization is covered as well, but for the moment I could just find a
German information (https://www.sinovo.net/Deltec-Cozmo-CoZmanager-340.asp) on that feature.

Quo - I was wondering if you like SI Diary. I am HIGHLY disappointed in the lack of charts and graphs that the cozmo software offers and I haven't found anything that actually will use the cozmo data other than SI. I find sidiary very clunky on first look though so maybe I need to give it a chance...hmm..

our original pump rep gave us the infrared devicewhen we got the pump 4 years ago. Its definately much easier to set up/ make changes on the computer vs doing it on the pump itself...

We just got Nathan's pump yesterday and in the box was a paper saying to call for a free cable.

Our Endo got a free one for us from the Cozmore Rep.

Our Cozmo arrived on Friday and we had the same slip of paper inside saying we could call to get the cable for free. We apparently have one on the way free of charge. It only makes sense to me! I can't imagine why they used to charge for it.

The bigger question is, why cant they just include the cable, rather than a slip of paper, having to mail it back, then them mailing the cable back to you....

I agree that would make much more sense, but it really didn't take long to get it in the mail. I called on Wednesday morning and the cord arrived at my door today.. just two days later. =) Good enough for me.

Ours did. I spoke with the rep over the phone when we placed the order and he asked if we were computer people and if we wanted the IR port. I said yes and it came in the box with all of the rest of the supplies. He was filling in for our usual rep and he was Great!

I will have to remember to do this when I place my pump order with them next week(after they finish up with insurance, etc...)

My husband and I use the software to Customize his pump. He just put in RED SOX for his pump name... Already getting ready for baseball season. We simply place the pump next to the computer and it downloads. We love it, use it all the time.

there probably is a large percentage of people who don't need it - and it's probably a costly item for them. I can think of just a few reasons
1) already have a dongle for another device (any old IR dongle will work)
2) have a built in IR device in their laptop
3) don't use the cozmanager software and/or aren't computer people (I don't know these people lol)

Hi Jane... smiths told me to get my own from Dick smiths... my lap top is so ancient that I don't think it will work and I'll probably have to go into the office to use it. That will be a short disconnect.
I do think that it should come with the pump. If it's part of the running.
I have seen the software printout and it's nice to get a 3 page report of all settings etc so you don't need to scroll thru all the different pages.
Now all I need is a printer LOL:o

Francesca - Justin will probaby bring you a free pump pack. He didn't give us one so I think the IR cable was an 'instead of'. ;)

I agree completely. I just downloaded today for the first time and I can't believe that I can't get a two-week average by time of day with basals and glucose readings so I can quickly and easily change the basals. This is the one thing I miss from the Paradigm; MiniMed Pump Solutions software. I took for granted that the Cozmo would have this type of capability - their pumps are so advanced, I thought the software would be too. Coincidentally, we received our "welcome package" today with the baseball cap. Inside were some "Just Coz" newsletters and it says in the coming attractions in 2006-2008 are software upgrades including charts and graphs. I guess Mrs. Spoiled is going to have to wait - or worse figure it out manually

By the way my pump came with the infra-red cord and a coupon for a free one - go figure.

I always found downloading the info helpful. However our endos office has the infrared thing, so they download it too. I could get a copy from him too.

I agree, with all the $ we spend on this they could give you the $50 cable!
