Hi,
My name is Geanne. I am Aunt to Shelby...type 1. I have volunteered myself to a fundraiser in Flagstaff, Arizona on Oct. 3rd 2008 for JDRF. I want to get as many donations of raffle items I can. I have been looking for Halle Berry autographes, Jonas Bros. (type 1) etc. Please... if anyone has any pull or strings... please contact me. I am not looking for money. I am looking for mother daughter or father son items or cool prizes related to JDRF. Thank you for even reading this. Geanne

Geanne, good job in thinking BIG! I initially did this, also. (Read "Three Cups of Tea" and you will see that the author did the same in attempting to help Afghan school children). However, your best support is in your own community. I go to businesses (during down times - no high school proms, holidays, etc) and generally local businesses are happy to donate smaller gift certificates. Having 10 $25 certificates to restaurants, retailers and grocery stores spreads the odds of winning something so you can keep the price of the ticket down between 1 and 5 bucks a ticket and sell more to neighbors, etc. Local celebrities (including those that deal with the diabetes issue may wish to donate lunch with them). Big name celebs just seem to get too many requests. Frankly, I would prefer a $25 grocery certificate than an autograph during these times! Thanks for your efforts in contributing to a cure! (I just wish I had the know how to do the scientific research - I probably would not get much sleep!)

Hi Geanne,
The previous poster is right. You will find much more help from your community and, at the same time educate them. As much as celeb things will have their impact, I would not want you to send them a request which may not be answered or come too late. I would not want you to be disappointed.
So start with the local businesses, and I'm sure people will really appreciate it.
It's great you are getting involved.
Wishing you much success!
