View Full Version : Have you ever missed giving a shot/bolus?

There have been many posts about parents forgetting to give a shot to their CWD....and I think that a majority of people have done it at some point. Early on, when everything is so new and scary, every single solitary thing gets logged (and the lancet gets changed for every poke, and the insulin is always refrigerated...:D ) but later on, when D care starts to become more "normal", it's easy to let it slip past for a time....maybe a few minutes, maybe a few hours.

I have missed giving Lantus twice (once when dad had just left for overseas, once when we were visiting Grandma's house); both times I realized several hours later, so I ended up chasing highs with Novolog and waiting until the next night. Major guilt both times, even though she was fine! ;)

After about 2 months post dx I forgot my first Lantus injection. It was to be given at 8, but I didn't remember until 10 when I saw DH taking his Lantus. A few weeks later, same thing. At the time I was the only one taking care of Julia's D. It was getting stressful, and I was having health problems and on meds that were making me fuzzy. Novolog with the meal has always been easy to remember thankfully, but after the second time forgetting the lantus we dicided that DH would give it, he would also relive me of duty from 7 to 10 so that I could focus on the kids, and myself, and not the D. It has really helped me to do it this way. Luckily, since then we haven't forgot a Lantus dose. Knock on wood.

I never missed a dose back when we were on NPH and Humalog - but once we switched to MDI with Levemir and Novorapid, and had to bolus after every meal, I did forget to bolus a couple of times. It happened because I would do the math for the bolus, then wait for Ryan to finish eating - somehow, because I'd done all the calculating for the dose, my head figured I'd actually given the shot, too! :o

The missed bolus alarm is one of the things I really love on the Cozmo pump - I've set up multiple "windows", one for breakfast, lunch, dinner, etc. The pump will alarm if no bolus was given during a specific block of time (ie: I've set 7:30 - 9:30 as the breakfast window - if we don't bolus between these times, we'll get an alarm at 9:31 reminding us). I haven't forgotten yet, but there have been times when we've eaten a little late for whatever reason, and the alarm goes off - it's a comfort to have it there!

I had a lot of guilt, too - but DH helped me to keep some perspective and realize that I'm only human. With everything to keep track of with D, it's almost a given that something will get forgotten at some point. It sucks, but it doesn't make me (or anyone else!) a terrible mother/father ;)

Yeah, it's happened to us a few times unfortunatley. :(

As competent as we like to think we are, mistakes happen and all we can do is try to learn from them.

None of us here are perfect (but we're pretty darn close...) :)

It shouldn't read "Never". It should read "Not Yet"...:D

There should be another poll of "have you ever given the wrong dose". Yes to all of the above.

The first missed dose I talked to the Endo and to my surprise he said" if you missed a dose, it means you are adjusting to this and it is becoming normal". What i take that to mean is that we are no longer is obcessive over D, and thats a good thing.

LOL!
Yes, I should have put in a "wrong bolus" choice too...that's happened as well.

Ben's Mommy is right; we're not perfect, but we are all pretty close to it! :D

Missed an injection once so far. I know itll happen again. Came close to giving wrong insulin. Luckily the pens are different colours. Just as Phillip went to inject I noticed he had the red one for fast acting, instead of the green one for slow acting. If we were still on syringes I think we would have given wrong insulin at least once.
