Both him and me lol! He just went barrelin in to the school. I parked and went in to the office to double check the care plans, the staff and supplies I left. Got there at 8:30 and did not leave till 9:45~what do you think, I'm a nervous mom? haha,ya,thats me. Went back b4 lunch hes at 185 so no insulin needed. Then went down to lunch with him, trying to show him this week the "smart things to pick". He's 6 I know the first day I'm not there its gonna b chocolate milk and applesauce with a side of pizza for lunch. The lunch ladies said she would watch and try to encourage or discourage when needed. Anyway went into town to go to the bank at 2 get a call he's 420 so back to the school I go for insulin. What a day! But we made it thats what counts!!!:) Jennifer

Yay!
It's a hurdle to get over, and you did it!!
There will be more, but one step at a time, you'll make it through!

Jennifer i have to hand it to you.. you did better than me for out 1st day, and we already had "D" for over 1.5 years..... First week i was there every day from open to about last 2 hours of school... GREAT job...

question: did you get the carb count for the food in the cafatieria???

Is there a nurse able to do the shots? I was also thinking the same thing about getting the carb counts of ALL the foods in the cafeteria. Our nurse has a copy and goes by that.

I'm so glad it went well! There will probably be alot of tweaking til you can let him go all day. I was in the school EVERDAY from November through February cause they went through 5 nurses in that period of time so I had to retrain each one and be there at lunchtime each day to MAKE SURE everything went well and they calculated everything right. Now, we have a great nurse a good solid 504 in place and things are well. It will take time until you feel comfortable leaving him in the care of others. You are not crazy. BTDT for months :D

Gosh, Ben started Montessori at the beginning of Sept and I spent 2 and a half weeks camped in the school reception with endless coffees and magazines!!! And he's been dx'd for over 2 years!!!!

Sounds like you are doing GREAT!!! I'm so pleased for you guys! :) :D ;)

I've been following all your posts and I'm truly amazed at how well you seem to be doing. When Ben was first dx'd I was nowhere near as competent and sane as you are!!! :o

Well done!

Dont'get me wrong the secretary in the office called me every 2 hrs and I will go everyday at lunch and I admit I even called a few extra times. She is the one that has diabetes training and is willing to give shots when the nurses won't. She -the office lady knows more about this than I do. I worry TONS but I know he is in capable hands. As I said b4, another boy age 7 has t1 and she has been a huge part of his care for 3 yrs going now. I call his mom all the time and she reassures me this is the best school to manage and care for D. Very well trained staff. I still think its ironic, I get a hr training for shots and nurse goes to school for yrs and they won't give shots. Liability I understand, just think its ironic, Jennifer

Julia was dx'd in Jan. I spent 1 1/2 weeks at school the whole time she was in Kindergarten....... I would not leave. I am still there quite a bit, and the staff all know me by my first name. I have to catch myself when talking to my kids about a teacher........I try to use the teachers first name, lol. Now everyone is comfy, and I can use it as a break that is much needed a few times a week, and not worry to bad. Our school nurse WILL do injections, in fact I think she has to by law. I would look into this.

Sounds like you are doing better then I did. I still email, or phone the school nurse daily, and drop in ALL of the time, and Julia has been in school for almost 2 months now!!!! It is scarey to send your baby off to school, and not know if they will take care of him, the right way. Don't worry about feeling nerotic. That is part of being a parent of a CWD. You are doing great!!! Hang in there!!!
