YEA - Good news my 18 yo DS finally got a job in an assisted living facility. He is studying medicine so this is great training and exposure. The question I have is this... he will be working Saturday and Sunday from 6am to 2pm. He is NOT a morning person. This is going to be rough. He has always had a hard time falling asleep at night and can sleep till 2pm everyday if he could. So, he made the decision that he can do this and it is worth it. Does anyone know if lack of sleep is going to cause any issues with numbers? Will he tend to be high or will he be low without a full 8 hours of sleep?
Also, since he will be getting up so early I thought I might have some breakfast choices ready that he could grab and nuke or eat quickly. Anyone have any suggestions on quick and easy breakfast? He definately will not eat any type of eggs, so breakfast sandwhiches are out - and Costco has really good mcmuffins - darn.:(
Thanks in advance for your help.

Congratulations to your son on the neat job!!! :)
My son tries to get 6 hours of sleep during the week with his full time summer internship job - he's up at 6:15am now. His sleeping hours generally were terrible where he would go to bed by 4am , but that was before the summer job. He attempts to go to bed at midnight now at least during the week.
Anyway, in my opinion he is always lacking sleep. His BG numbers can be good and bad, and I don't necessarily see them fluctuate directly with rising early or with number of hours of sleep.
He does tend to have high numbers in the morning. Breakfast for him is usually cereal - though this morning he had leftover pizza. ;) He has also started on coffee with dairy creamer. My boy is growing up - he's starting to need caffeine.
Just as a warning college has really screwed up my son's sleeping hours - it drives my husband and I crazy.
P.S. Can you tell me about these Coscto McMuffins? Are they in the freezer section?

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question about the bg numbers, etc. But I'm glad my 18 yo isn't the only one with horrible sleep habits (he's laying on the couch now...but awake at least). His gf's mother is bizzare. Her rule is that the gf can come home before 10 pm or after 2 am (when mom gets up to go to work?) so Alex usually takes her home right at 2 am. I've been insisting he just come home and go to sleep at that pt b/c I'm always waking up at 3:30 am wondering what noise I'm hearing (tv, pantry door, etc).
Anyway, I'd just have your son test a bit more often the first few weeks to see how this new schedule is affecting his bg.
Alex has bad eating habits too. But he likes PB crackers or a Nutrigrain bar and oj for breakfast when he's in a hurry. I would think some sort of toaster foods (toast, bagel) along with yogurt or a fruit would give him some variety but be easy to make.

Aaron has pulled a few all-nighters without his numbers doing anything noticeably different. 2 days a week is probably not enough to change his sleep cycle, but kids are resilient at this age. As long as he can "catch up" on Monday I predict he'll be fine.
A lot of kids have real trouble eating that early, so he might want to eat something small and pack along a "2nd breakfast" (or I guess more accurately a good snack) for midmorning.
