Hi
First of all I want to say thanks to everyone on this site for helping so many people. I have been reading and learning so much! Well, here is my story. I have a little girl who was a preemie ( I adopted her so I don't know if diabetes runs in her heritage) She has never been on the growth charts (Currently at almost 3 yrs old she only weighs 20 lbs) but now she is losing weight. She will be 3 yrs old the end of this month. We have been to all kinds of Drs and specialists and no one really knows what is going on with her, but yesterday the ped endocrinologist said that it could be diabetes. BUT he didn't offer to test her right then? After I started doing some research online this fact concerned me. Why not just do the test if you think it could be that?? She has consistently tested low for Vit D levels until the last lab test which was about 3 weeks ago. Also her BUN levels are always high. Since birth she has had painful bowel movements most times even though she goes regularly and they don't seem excessively hard or anything. She drinks and drinks all day long and she sucks the liquids down FAST. Due to her low weight I have tried reducing her liquid intake but she cries and cries and I end up giving it to her. The thing that really scares me after looking online is her morning diapers. Her morning diapers are always extremely heavy with urine. Much more so than my other 3 children's ever were and one of those used to have several bottles a night while this child only ever has one sippy cup of milk while going to sleep. I have had several other people comment on her heavy AM diapers also. So...I was wondering if anyone else could share their experience with pre diagnosis symptoms in a toddler. I did do a finger prick BG test this morning and she was 85 which is fine but I am going to test it several other times over the next few days to see where it goes. Also Monday I am going to call the Endo and tell him to do whatever tests he needs to do to check this out. I DO NOT want to find this out by having to rush her to the ER when a critical situation arises from not being diagnosed. I don't know if any or all of these sypmtoms are linked to diabetes but just thought I would throw them out here to see if anyone else has experienced anything similar....So any input anyone could give would be GREATLY appreciated...:) Thank you so much

I suggest you make a trip NOW to the pharmacy and get some ketostix and strips to check the urine for sugar. Does she have strong smelling breath?

You can also get an inexpensive blood glucose meter and that will give you your answer immediately. If her number is high, I'd take her straight to the ER.

I'd run out now to Target or a grocery store with a pharmacy and pick one up right away. I hope you get some answers and that your little girl starts feeling better.

Hi,

I'm so hoping it's no D, but we're here for you if it is.

Like others have said, check for ketones, and call the local hospital for a endo appointment NOW to do some testing. You need answers soon.

Good luck and take care!
