I know that I strongly encourage grandparents to become more involved in the care of their T1 grandchildren, but there is an old gambling axiom that can come into play when it comes to the welfare of these kids. That axiom, also a line from the song “The Gambler” by Kenny Rogers, is “Know when to hold ‘em; know when to fold ‘em”. The meaning is clear.
Emma has been having some control issues lately and is also without her CGMS sensor. She is experiencing significant swings in her blood sugar, going low after swimming or playing outdoors then rebounding to high levels after corrective treatment. I certainly can’t say for sure why this is happening, but it does appear that those activities are a root cause of her insulin reaction. To add to the equation she recently had a dosage increase of her JRA medication, and who knows what effect that may have.
We wanted to have the kids for a sleepover this weekend, but also knew from experience that sleepovers with us have caused mild insulin reactions due to the increased activity of her running her papa ragged:D and the excitement/stress of being away from home and her mom and dad. So under the circumstances, we didn’t feel the possibility of exacerbating the problem was worth the risk; so instead of a sleepover at our house we will babysit the kids at their house while the parents go play.
Don’t read too much into this decision grandparents. This was a situational decision made in the best interest of the grandchild – not fear. We are not afraid of keeping her for a sleepover, even given the BG fluctuations and the absence of CGMS data. In fact, we are confident that we are capable of handling any possible problem that might arise; but for what reason? Mom and dad aren’t going out of town, it's not an emergency – they are just going to have a relaxing meal and evening together.
Let common sense prevail. Fold ‘em. There will be plenty of time for sleepovers.:)
