Hi everyone. I am always looking for parents with diabetic kids too talk to. I can see this is the perfect spot. My daughter Renee is 11 and starting 7th grade in the fall. Camp Wanakura in San Diego county is next week, we have gone four years, I think. She has been looking forward to it since we left the parking lot last year!
Renee is a tough cookie. She did her own pokes at the hospital 3 days after she was diagnosed, and took the syring out of my hand 3 weeks before her 5th birthday to do it herself (I swear we were very gentle). Except for vaccinations and blood tests, she hasn't let anyone near her with a needle again. They called her 'precocious'. Right.
Unfortunately, she came down with Hashimoto's Hypothyroidism soon after. I have it, my mom, her mom did too. That means mandatory blood tests every 3 months into adulthood. San Diego Children's Endocrine Center has the in-house A1c test with just a fingerpoke.
My son Zachary is healthy and we have both been tested (for antibodies i think), no diabetes in the near future for us. I get asked that by new people all the time, it bothers me.
Anyway, I decided to get a science degree so that I can understand what happened to her. She attended some of my Endocrinology and Nutrition classes, and talked to the other students about diabetes, followed by Q&A. I was so proud!
I wanted learn all that I could to better take care of her, teach her, and be useful to help others. I am graduating now and will get a job in this field.
Our children deserve a Cure, and nothing less.
