We started our trial on the dexcom tuesday. She was fantasic when they put the sensor on her, did not even flinch! She has not bothered the sensor either, i think she forgot that part was there already!:)
I love the technology! Knowing her sugar every five min. is really neat! You can set the high alarm and a low one too. There is a second low one that you can not change and that one is at 55. So far we have had all three of the alarms go off. She had a low the first day, one of those where she just dropped like a brick! The below 55 alarm went off! The meter actully showed ??? at one point, now i know that means she was droping fast! When i got her in and took her sugar myself she was 33!!!!! Then of course she rebounded and was high!
I really like that in the morning i can switch to the 9 hr screen(there are three screens 1hr, 3hr, and 9hr) and i can see everything that happened in the night. Very interesting.
The bad part i have found is that the meter part is rather large...specially for a little one. Plus you have to be with in 5-10 feet so when she is out side playing she has to wear it. She keeps taking it off and leaving it on the picnic table wich is out of range! However once she put it back on it finds her pretty fast. At night we just leave it on her dresser and it picks her up all night long and the alarm vibrates first which we can hear through the baby monitor before the beeping starts!
So far i am not sure this is the thing for her. I do love the knowing where her sugars are at all times. The alarm is great....I do not think she would have stoped play that first day had the thing not been beeping at her. She was having to much fun and we would have been in real trouble! We are just having so much trouble keeping it with her! Still early in the trial so we will see!:)

The insurance will cover it too, now we just have to figure out if this is going to work.

Try the spiebelt to hold it. My daughter loves these to hold it. We have the monitor, tissues and glucose tabs in it and it hold sit well but does not bounce around while they are doing activities.
Plus if you email the company and let them know you are from here or find the previous posts on them you can get a disocunt for them. They come in all sorts of colors. We already have 3 of them and 1 for myself.
Good luck, we love the dexcom.

I am glad that the insertion went well. We love the dex, it takes a bit to get used to but well worth it IMO. Sam does not wear it all the time but when he does, we get very useful info out of it.

Glad you're trying a CGM...

If the monitor itself seems large or hard to keep on her, take a look at the Guardian. It comes with two kinds of clips that are very secure (my DD does gymnastics and everything else with it and it never falls off). Also the Guardian receiver is very small, rugged, and essentially waterproof, all good for little kids.

It's alarms are not as loud as the Dexcom, but they have much better options to set alarm thresholds by time of day which is very helpful since at night you don't expect post-prandial high's but during the day you do.

The needle is also a little larger than the Dexcom, but has not been a problem for us.

Just thought I'd mention these tradeoffs in case you like the CGM but have reservations about certain features of the one you are trying.

I thought about the spiebelt last night! We had family and friends over for a party. Lots of little kids to play with. She was playing so hard and running all over the place! The monitor was bouncing all over the place. I finally turned it around and cliped it so if was inside her pants. Still was bouncing around! Drove her nuts!

We are almost done with the trial. I am thinking this is not the thing for her. She does not mind the sensor but can not stand wearing the monitor. So far we have lost it 3 times, like missing four over an hour. Once we found it in the toy box! Ahhh!
I have also found the readings to be really different at times. It will tell me she is low 60's and a finger prick said she was mid 80's????
I do love seeing the trend over the past hour though. Gives me a good idea of which way she is going.
The big thing is having to keep it so close to her. She just loves to take it off!!!!

Have you tried the spibelt? It really made a huge difference for Hailey. She was complaining a lot about her pump/cgms and wanting the omnipod but since getting that she stopped complaining.

That was basically our assessment as well. Emma didn't lose her, but I really didn't like the 2 pieces of electronics thing. I liked the trending a lot - but the "point in time" readings weren't great. I would love to have one to do trending about once a month, since that seems to be when she is doing crazy things, but I'm not sure we'd be a 100% of the time family either
