Hello,

I am a bit worried and would like your opinion...

At 11:50 am , my daughter check her bs and it read
"Warning!" "GLUCOSE HIGH" and under that, it stated that the meter only read to 600 and that I should check her ketones.

I thought she forgot to wash her hands, or made a mistake, so I washed her hands and did the test myself, with the same results. I even did a control, it was right on target. SO her bs was over 600.

I called the endo nurse and she told me to give her 1 unit novolog for a correction and to check bs every 30 -45 mins, continue checking ketones and call her back at 2:00.

Mikayla started getting a cold 2 days ago and yest had a bs of 488 and when I gave her 1 unit correction, she dropped to 110 in less than an hour, and she felt very weak and was shaking.

She is eating okay and is drinking plenty of fluids.

When I checked her bs at 1:00, it was down to 590. When I checked it a 1:45, it again read " Glucose High" So I called the endo and this time the head endo was paged and he told me to give her 3 units of novolog for a correction, check her bs and ketones every hour and to call back at 4:00.

I am only 7 months into all of this and have never had this happen before. The only time she was this high was when she was diagnosed , she was 971. I went to the CWD chart room and a couple of people there thought that maybe she should be in the ER..

And I'm wondering if I'm doing the right thing by trying to treat her at home? The endo said that as she is drinking plenty, isn't throwing up and her ketones are only trace, that we should be able to treat her at home.

What have you done in the past in a similar situation..

Thank you..

Hmmm...that would scare me too! I say that not to worry you more (I am sure you are concerned enough), but rather to sympathize with you. Seeing as I am "only a mom" and not a medical professional, I don't really feel I can give advice in this circumstance. That said, I'd stay in VERY close contact with her doctor, continue to monitor her blood sugar frequently (at least every hour), be rather aggressive with the insulin as long as she doesn't have a stomach virus, and keep lots of snacks handy in case of lows. Good luck to you. :(

My son went through very high blood sugar readings when he had tonsillitis 6 months ago.

I kept in very close contact with his endo for 24 hours. We must have given double or triple the amount of insulin that we normally do in an attempt to bring his readings down. I was so scared the whole time that is blood sugar would come crashing down, but because of the virus, it remained high. He had moderate levels of ketones.

We eventually had to go in to hospital and put him on an IV drip of insulin. Within 4 hours of this, his levels came down.

Last weekend my son had a cold, and his blood sugar levels were high again. I was able to just treat him at home with extra insulin. He did not have ketones at this time.

I hope my experiences help you to not feel so alone.

Sending hugs your way. Dealing with an illness and diabetes is very difficult.

Hi Mik's mom. Do you have an update, is your daughter's bs going back to normal yet? I would be nervous like you, but you can handle this. I too, cannot give medical advice, especially since we're new and each endo. treats differently. Trust your gut and if your mom instinct tells you, goto the ER, it can't hurt if things are not getting better. Good Luck and I hope she's better soon!

Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much for posting. It was a very long night..

Normally she is so insulin sensitive that we worry she will drop too quickly when we do a correction. For example when she was 550 with a virus a month or so ago, the endo told me to give her 1 unit novo, she was down to 70 in 90 mins!

So I was hesitant to keep giving her insulin, but I had already given her 4 units and the meter still read "Glucose High" so I had to gave her 2 units every hour and after 9 units, it finally came down to the 540  9 units is more than she usually has all day including her lantus dose..

I was a wreck. She is doing a bit better today but we are still dealing with highs, before lunch it was 480 and before dinner 536.. I will be so glad when she gets rid of this darn cold.

I can't thank you all enough or posting and letting me know I'm not alone in all of this. I live in a small town and Mikayla is the only child in school who has diabetes, so I really have no one to talk to. I am so glad I found this site.

Thank you all again!
