Hi everyone,
I have a question. Does anyone else have trouble with their child's blood sugar going low very quickly, if they do a correction without food? My daughter's bs was 488 this am when I dropped her off at school. I called her endo and was told to give her 1/2 unit novolog. It made her drop really fast and feel very shaky. It went down to 110 in less than an hour. I am told she is insulin sensative, anyone else have this problem?
Thank you,
Mik's Mom:)
My son does not have this issue, but I was just reading something today in which the person said they always eat a couple of crackers along with the extra dose to prevent that sinking feeling. Maybe that would help.

I'm 19 and I have this problem. I've noticed in general that if I eat a little snack with a correction bolus I come down more evenly. It's a horrible feeling when your blood sugar changes so fast, so I recomend a snack. I normally have half an apple or a piece of toast or something that size.

Thank you both for posting. Mikayla said she gets dizzy and feels shaky when she drops this fast, it truly scares her. I will try giving her a snack and see if it helps. Thank you~

I always give my son a little snack when I give him Humalog (which is the Canadian equivalent to your Novolog).
Usually 1/2 a banana, or a few crackers

My daughter is insulin sensitive also and even when she takes humolog with her meals, she is low 1 hour later. Anyone have any suggestions?? She only takes 1/2 unit with breakfast and dinner but still gets low shortly after---1 hour or so.

When I take my H with meals, if my bg before the meal is in normal to low range, I actually wait until I'm done eating because the H starts working within 15 mins, but the food can take longer especially when protein and fat are involved.
Maybe delaying her shot by 15 - 30 mins into the meal would reduce the chances of a low happening.
What are her numbers 2 hours after - that's basically when the H has pretty much done its work.
Have you asked about diluting her H?

We have also tried waiting 15-30 min. in the past.
Words of advice- set a timer! We have forgoten to give meal boluses when we would decide to wait.
