I have just realized that the Salter Scale Carb factor is WAY off on Pancakes:Plain The last few times we've had pancakes, Carson's gone SKY high. So tonight we had GF Trader Joes pancakes. The box actually had the weight of a prepared pancake on it as well as the dry mix weight. I have a "cheat sheet" of carb factors and the Trader Joes carb factor was .44 (for prepared pancake) and my cheat sheet was also .44 So I compared that to the Salter Scale Pancakes:Plain and it's carb factor was .28 That's a HUGE difference. Salter scale said my plain pancakes were 32 grams, and by Trader Joe and cheat sheet's calculations, it was 53 grams. BIG difference!!! No wonder Carson had been so high all those times.
I think I'll email them.
We've been using the "Pancakes Dry Mix Prepared" option on the Salter Scale, which is a lot more carbs. Do you know if it's closer to an accurate carb count?

We use the same as Coni :o We haven't had them often but, from what I remember, she was in a good range after.

I just checked Pancakes Dry Mix Prepared and that carb factor is .71 on the Salter Scale. That is still a huge difference from .44 I think that's why I never used the dry mix/prepared one because when I would weigh the pancakes with that carb factor, the carb amount was incredibly high. So I started using Pancakes:Plain, figuring I was weighing a plain pancake with no butter or syrup on it.
We had really good numbers last night using .44 as a carb factor.

It may depend on the brand. I used "Wheat Pancakes, prepared" off of CalorieKing.com and it's worked well. That's .266, and we've been using it a lot.
I can't say enough good things about Bob's Red Mill 10-Grain Pancake mix. I got a little bold gave Alex 60g carbs of it the other day, and his hourly numbers were, 100, 134, 96, 94. (Okay, this is from memory but it was very close to that.) No other food to "buffer" it. Straight carbs. But, we do use carb-free syrup.

The Salter can give you some general guidelines on a food that is more than one ingredient, but it's not always precise or accurate. I sometimes trust my intuition more than the Salter.:p However, I think it's accurate for one ingredient items like a piece of fruit, pure white flour, etc. . . I once had a piece of pizza that I weighed on it and it was disturbingly low in carbs for that piece, in that case, I upped the grams significantly and it worked better.

That's exactly why I have a carb factor cheat sheet taped onto my Salter Scale!! I sometimes use the carb factor if I don't trust the Salter -- it's not too often but on those things like the pancakes, I double check.

That's a great tip, I keep the carb factors taped to my wall, but I should tape it to the scale since I bring it out with me quite a bit. I have the travel one.
