As many of you know, Deacon got his first bike yesterday. He is a pro already at riding it. Last night we experienced several low numbers, and in the middle of the night he woke up low. I treated him. This morning he woke up at a perfect 158. So is there anyway to judge ahead of time how low he will go. Are these the nights that I give him a 10 carb snack or lower the night time dose of Lantus? Remember he is on a split Lantus regimen. I know he is going to be riding his bike as often as he can. He has already tried to take it out this morning during a thunderstorm. He even asked me if he could ride around when there is a tornado .

if he's going to be bike riding every day and you're spliting lantus, you might have no trouble lowering it a little at night following a very active day.

Ian gets random lows from bike riding too. I did find that near the beginning of spring when he first learned to ride a two wheeler he would go low a lot quicker than he does now. Same thing that we experience with swimming - near the beginning of summer he'll be low from swimming and come the end of august he's not. His body seems to adjust. So maybe this will help for Deacon too?

Congrats on your bike Deacon!!!

Carson learned how to ride his bike last summer, I think it was, and we had AWFUL lows for about the first week or 2. I think it was mainly becaue he didn't have the muscles for it. When he finally got used to riding it, and had built up the muscles, then we didn't have the low anymore. Now he hardly ever goes low just from riding his bike.

I would just give him uncovered snacks rather than lower the lantus dose. Especially since he woke up in range this morning. And then see how he is doing a week or 2 from now.

Have fun Deacon

How wonderful that he loves his bike so much!!

We find that any "new" exercise is a good time to err on the side of caution and go to bed with an extra snack (and/or temp basals on the pump). You just never can tell how something is going to hit them.

At the beginning of summer, swimming drops them like rocks, but as they get used to it, that diminishes.

All I can suggest is that maybe you do give him a little extra carb/fat/protein snack before bed and test, test, test. After a few times you should be able to determine how the bike riding is going to impact his BG levels.

Good luck and have fun! We are big bike riders, too.

You know, I was paranoid when Nolan wanted to do a day of Ragbrai with his dad. He was 8... My mom even bought him little biker shorts, so I had to say yes.
It was terrifying for me.
But his sugar pretty much stayed between 120 and 170 the whole day.
I was still grateful to drive 65 miles to go get him. :)
