Hi. I have been in pump training for the past few weeks. We are taking it really slow, but next week we are actually hooking it up to my daughter. I have a question for all of you who first used the pump and SLEEP for your kids...

How will I not stay up all night on my rocker, with her laying on my chest so that I know she will not pull out the pump in her sleep? She is a total "mover" all night long, and I just cannot even envision leaving the pump on her and it staying put?? So I need advice so I calm down. Please tell me your stories of those first couple of weeks.

Thanks!!!

I have no help, but wonder what the answer is...My son starts pump soon. :)

I checked him like crazy in the beginning, but once I was reassured he would not wrap himself around the tubing (LOL) I was ok. He sleeps with the pump in a pump pouch and he moves A LOT during sleep, and we've never had any problems.

Good luck! It'll be ok!!:cwds:

PS - You can check for smaller tubings too. Ask your CDE or endo.
And we sleep with the baby monitor on;)

We are very new to the pump but have no problem with sleeping, he keeps it clipped and it does not seem to bother him at all. It is scary but so worth it!

First of all, congratulations on your upcoming pumping!

As far as our experience with sleep:
Honestly, it has never been an issue. Now, obviously all kids are different, but Max never pays any attention to his. He was dxd and started pumping at 12 mos old, so he wasn't a big mover, but now he is in full blown 3 year old toss-n-turn mode and it has still never been a problem.

With that said, I can understand your nervousness. I was also worried about sleeping with the pump. I'm sure you'll be up checking on her frequently with the pump start so you can always check on the pump at that time. I think that in time you will be more comfortable as you find it not to be an issue.

There are a variety of pump packs available and I'm sure she'll have fun picking them out. Some kids wear softer ones for bed, but we wear our day one.

Good luck!

How old is your daughter? Where in the northeast do you live?

In the beginning weeks, they had us checking Abby every two hours. It was like having newborns all over again. In time, we were able to cut back on checking and had different scenarios for when to do additional checks.

We've never had a problem with Abby getting tangled in her tubing or pulling the set out. She wears a pump pack and it moves around her waist easily, but not to the point where she gets tangled up. She is a mover at night, so I was worried.

How old is your daughter? They have special onesies that the pump can go in for added safety.

Where in the great Northeast are you????

Thanks guys. This is all helping me and I am reading the responses out loud to my mother and husband too. We are all very nervous about it.

I am in the Capital District region of New York. Any fellow upstaters?

Make your sleep a priority.
Think of it this way, the pump is designed to be able to hold up to that, the sites too.
If she were to scratch, or become irritated at the tubing and pull at it... she will cause herself a certian degree of pain when trying to remove it, which will wake her up.
There is the odd chance that she might wake up and pull it out or disconnect because it is uncomfortable. I think if you set an alarm to wake up at say... 4am, and check bg while you are at it... That should be fine.
Mistakes will happen with the pump start, but that is part of pumping, that is the learning curve, and you will be fine.

We're in Rochester, NY!
My son is 2 and will hopefully getting on the pump real soon too. He moves all over the place while he sleeps so I'm sure we'll be nervous too!

I was never really concerned about Grace sleeping with her pump on, since I had 6-1/2 years of my own pumping experience before she started on hers. We clip it to whatever pajamas she's wearing, or to her panties or even her Goodnite if she's wearing a grandpa t-shirt (a favorite nightie from sleeping over at Gma & Gpa's). I often find Grace laying right on top of it and it makes me thankful kids are flexible and don't hurt as much from odd positioning as we would.

For myself, I have it clipped to my pants or shirt, or even tucked under the side of my pillow if I need. In over 7 years of pumping now, I've only once had a site come out during the night, and it had absolutely NOTHING to do with sleeping!

Sean started out using a soft pouch for bedtime but now he just clips it to his pants waist. He goes all over the bed, even ends up at the foot sometimes and has fallen out a couple times, Sean that is not the set. :D No problems w/ him losing one while sleeping yet. The only one he's lost was from him pulling(scratching) at it while awake in the first week or so of pumping. I was more concerned about him pushing buttons while tossing and turning in bed, but that wonderful invention they call a "lock" does wonders for that too. lol

My dd is 4 and she wears hers in a pump pocket t-shirt under her pajamas. We like the shirts from kangaroo pump pockets: www.mykpp.com

She usually uses these during the day, too.

Ian has never touched his in his sleep, but he's a bit older I guess. But still, he'll either lie it next to him on the bed or put it in a pump pack and that's it. he just forgets it.

If you're around Albany, there are many of us in MA who are only a a few hours into central ma - 2 hours from me to Albany.

It's never been an issue. Jacob sleeps in just his skivvies and the pump is clipped to them. I've even forgotten to clip it back on after a late night check and I've had to hunt around for it at the next check. It's still not a problem. The tubing is tough and you can tie it in a knot and it will still deliver. His site is held on with Skin Tac and it's pretty difficult to pull it out. He would be far more likely to put it out while running around and snagging the tubing on something. There's no way he moves around enough while he is sleeping to pull it out.

Phillip has never had a problem with his pump at night. I was worried about this too at first. I swear he moves more in bed than during the day. He just puts his pump in his pyjama pocket. Never pulled it out or anything. He'll only wear the pyjamas with pockets now. I will say make sure you lock the keys at bedtime.

I'm glad you asked this question! DD is on her saline trial and tonight's the first night sleeping with the pump on. We locked it and used the small clip pouch Animas provides and clipped it to her pull up. She has an arm site, so the tubing is running up her sleeve and under her pj shirt. I hope it works!

First of all welcome back!!!!

Alli sleeps with her pump clip clipped to her jammies. She has never pulled it out either. Skin tac is a wonderful product. It helps with the adhesion of the set. We use it every set change. If she is a real crazy sleeper there is a product called IV 3000. We use this when Alli swims and it really helps. We have only lost a few sets but when we swim it is an all day thing. Good luck and nice to see you posting again!!!!

All of these responses were read to my husband and mother, my back-ups! So, thank you thank you and again, THANK YOU for all this advice. It sure does help a lot. I am just scared and need to get over it. My little girl's got it harder than I can ever imagine, all that she goes through, so I have to just trust in our new life with the pump. I am very excited at the thought of not giving her all those shots each day.

And Frizzy Razzy, I am in Holyoke a lot visiting relatives, so that must be close by to where you are. I'll PM you.

Thanks again everyone!

Connor is all over the place when he is sleeping and we have had no issues with the pump. He wears his in a zippered pump pack around his waist.

Taylor wears her's in a few differant places ...our favorite is in a tank top that has a pocket for the pump that you can thread the tube through or to just clip it to the pj bottoms but some nights she just clips it to her undies or we have even stuck it in a sock and safety pined it to a tshirt ....she dosent like to wear the pump packs ..says it makes her tummy hurt
...also she moves allllll over the place and we have yet to have it get pulled out at night

I think this was my biggest worry when we started and it turned into such a non-issue! She just sleeps with it clipped to whatever she wears. She has never gotten tangled.
