View Full Version : Pump-insulin delivery rate changes - do you really use it?

I've never used it, but then again, never had a problem with 'burning' sensation (at least Ian's never 'expressed' discomfort).
Any of you change the delivery rate on your pumps regularly?
Also, maybe a silly question...if the delivery rate is longer, then would this change the duration of the insulin action from the bolus you gave? For instance, you bolus x units, and the insulin supposedly is active for x hours, how long will the actual duration be, kwim? I don't know if I'm making sense...
I think my question is will spacing out the delivery affect DIA and all that good stuff ? :o

Paula,
What pump do you use. I cannot change the delivery rate on the MM522, it's methodically slow. Do you mean how fast the insulin is being delivered at the time of the bolus?

Yes, the insulin delivery rate at the time of bolus.
We're on the Deltec Cozmo.

I don't think it would affect the DIA. When we were on injections with Lantus (fast delivery) and the pump (very very slow delivery) with Lantus, it didn't affect the DIA. The thing, IMO, that affects the DIA is the SIZE of the bolus.

Aaron has his Animas set to slow delivery -- it did sting a bit on regular. It's not that slow though -- about what he would do through a pen. Certainly not enough to affect the insulin action.
I know you can also set a 6-minute extended bolus to really slow down delivery. But we've never done it.

We use Cozmo and have the bolus set for 1 min. Most of the time Hunter doesn't complain though some of the larger bolus' (especially breakfast) he will for a moment complain that it stings or hurts. It's never been bad enough that we would consider changing to a longer bolus duration.

Everyone uses this feature. The question is if you are going to change it from the factory default setting. You can think of it as more of a preference you set one time rather than something you change each time. My son uses the slow delivery, but we don't change it or even think about changing it.

Of course...I should have pointed this out in my OP. Thanks for doing it.

When Abby is wearing the set in her arm, I turn the setting from normal to slow because the larger bolus' tend to be painful in the arm. It has absolutely no effect on the IOB time, if you were to do an extended or combo bolus. It litterally is just a sloooooow push of the insulin.

Sponge Bob moment....lol!!:p
I have slowed down the rate of delivery for Ella's boluses. From time to time a bolus would sting while going in.

I slowed ours down just to see if that would be better. Tori hated it and I had to turn it back up. :p

We have Jacob's pump set to slow but it's not very slow. It's still much faster than the MM. If you want it really slow you can do a combo bolus on the Animas pump with 0% up front and 100% over 15 minutes.

I think Phillips is on the factory setting. He's never complained about bolus' stinging, but occasionally says he feels the insulin go in more. I might watch a bit closer and see if this is with larger bolus'.

I used it when I was on the Cozmo. I had problems with clogged sets if I went too fast & some minor stinging with large boluses if too fast. I drawned the battery faster if too slow. I find 2-3 optimal.

I've used the slow delivery a lot with Mark when the sets are in his belly and he gets more than 2 units. Little guy's got no body fat, and the insulin stings him a lot more in the belly! (Doesn't bother him at all in the bum)
We also use the combo bolus for .1 hours (6 minutes) when he gets a big dose, so it doesn't sting as much.
I never noticed any changes in the duration or any other side effects.

It seems there is a big difference between the pumps. The Animas has adjustable bolus' between 1 and 4 seconds. The Cozmo can deliver between 1 and 5 minutes, but no faster than 1 minute. The MM is 30 secs. Interesting :cwds:
