Since Connor was diagnosed almost 6 months ago I have not let him stay away from me overnight. We are very fortunate to have 2 sets of grandparents who were willing to go through Diabetes training with us and have learned as much as they can so they would be able to keep him this summer.
This week I have been sick so my mom offered to come get Connor and keep him for a couple of days. I have to mention here that we have been dealing with some major high blood sugar issues and insulin resistance for the past few days. My mom has also had very little training on the pump but was willing to learn. So, she picked him up Wednesday around noon. I was nervous about letting him go but I trust my mom.
For 2 days now my mom has called me with every blood sugar check to verify that she is making the right decisions. She has dealt with some major highs and a pretty significant low. She has not slept for 2 nights for fear he will go too high or too low so she checks him hourly through the night.
But, she has also enjoyed some wonderful one on one time with Connor. She even got brave and took him to the water park for about 3 hours today. She called me 3 times while they were there to make sure she was doing everything right but they had a great time.
I am feeling much better now and I am so proud of my mom for stepping up to the plate and being willing to learn as much as she has over the past few days. She has told me several times that hands on is definitely the way to learn and she is much less intimidated by the diabetes than she was just a few days ago. From now on I can feel completely confident leaving him with my parents and knowing he will be taken excellent care of.
