So tonight was the party/picnic before the last day of school and there was a drawing. It's one of those drawings where you guess the correct number of pieces of candy in the gallon jar and the closest person wins. Well there were probably 200 entries and Madison guessed it exactly. The winner won't be announced to the public until tomorrow, but the PTA president just called me to tell me that Madison won, and if it I wanted her to have all of that candy or should they get her another prize. Her comment made me laugh..."what are the chances that the ONLY diabetic kid in the school wins a gallon jar of candy?" :D I thought it was very nice that she called me concerned, but I told her that Madison has been talking about that candy for a week and of course she can have it. Funny huh?

I can't wait to get my hands on the malt balls at the bottom of the jar!!

Good for Madison!

Our Maddie won the "cake walk" last fall at a local fair, the prize?? the HUGE CAKE! But it made her enormously happy and we cut the cake in 1/4s are shared the wealth with friends and all ended well ;)
PS when they took Maddie's pic for the local paper I came this close to telling the reporter how ironic is was that she, the D kid had won... but didn't, and I think Maddie liked just being the "regular" kid who won the game.

btw, Hope it's good candy! :D

That is so funny! Reminds me of our candy prize this year ... Connor won a prize for collecting money for his Run/Walk at school this year. He got to go up on the stage to pick a prize during a school assembly. Of all the things he could choose, he selected a candy machine! It's a mini vending machine with pre-marked places for M&Ms and other candy bars. In front of all the teachers and kids, after I had just talked about making healthy food choices at lunch, etc. Silly boy :p.

Scott did this one year when he was about 8 or 9. His was "guess the jelly beans in the jar". He won and very proudly arrived home with the jar full of HUNDREDS of jelly beans. We used them to treat his lows and he just thought it was great.

I think Nichole has an uncanny ability to win a prize if it is candy. Even if it is not the first or second prize!!!

She almost never fails to win the cakewalk at our school winter dinner every year--I don't even but her the tickets, people give them to her!!

Congrats and enjoy your winnings!!!

This just goes to show that people with diabetes are great with numbers:D

I love it! Nice of the PTA pres to a)reach out to you b)offer another option c)NOT OFFER SUGAR FREE CANDY (might as well give a box of laxatives)!

Tell her to enjoy the candy!

Last year, my son hit the most home runs in his baseball league. The prize at the concession stand for a home run? Fried dough the size of a dinner plate topped with powdered sugar.

Fortunately they let him have have whatever he wanted in place of the fried dough. Sometimes he's take one piece and share the rest with team mates.

Here it is - the coke can is for perspective. She was so suprised when they announced she had won. Yum, huh? She guessed 896 pieces and she got it right on the nose. The school nurse said that since she was so good at counting carbs she was a shoe in to win this because counting pieces of candy is MUCH easier than counting carbs.

Tell her congratulations. At least like someone else said, you'll be covered for lows for a while.

At school this year I won the contest for the snickers and cherry-chocolate Kisses in a jug. I won, but I gave it to my aunt. A Snicker every once in awhile is ok, but I don't like those cherry-chocolate things :P BLECH!! Congrats to Madison for Great Guessing!! Go Diabetic Counters!!

Congratulations Madison!

Sounds like you've got some good support at your school for her. That is awesome!

My ds is the only kid at diabetic at his school too. Every one of teachers, cafeteria help, the Principal were so wonderful! I cried a couple of times because they were so concerned and compassionate with him. They called me for every party and special event wanting to know if they needed to order something special for him. I could go on and on....but I won't.

Enjoy those maltballs! ;)
