View Full Version : Question about using tips or sides of fingers for blood checks

I don't recall in our training being told to use the side of the finger. So uknowingly we used the tips. And that's what Lia has gotten used to and detests using the side. Now I never remember to ask the endo about it at appts, but her pediatrician always looks at her fingers when we see him and scolds us for using the tips as he says it will kill her nerve endings. I do try and get her to do the sides, but she is freaked out by it.
Anyway after the last we saw the pediatrician I looked up info on this and found something, somewhere by a doctor saying it was fine to use the tips. But I don't recall where.
So....anyone know anything about this? I will keep working with her, but it's so frustrating and if it's ok to keep using the tips, she would be very happy lol.

I think they recomend using sides cos it's supposed to be a bit less painful. Rotate around all the fingers and share the love, her fingers will probably be fine, and try to keep moving outward towards the side. One day you'll discover you've been using the sides for a while and the ped isn't scolding you :)

Our Ped is strict about that too, but he told us at dx. Our Ped says not use the tips because of damage to the nerve endings, just like your doc.:cwds:

we try and stay away from the pads of the fingers, but we don't go to far down the sides..it starts to hurt.. we try and rotate the fingers..

We were told to hold hands together (like you are praying or begging;)) and whatever is showing on your fingertips can be used to test.

We don't test on tips because it seems to hurt more, so Maddie likes sides. But, I believe that I have read that, Once Upon a Time... when D kids were expected to have vision problems and possible blindness they were instrusted to protect their finger tips so that they could learn Brail. :( I kid you not. I wish I could remember where I read that!)
But of course, it makes little sense, as those long ago kids ( poor things) didn't have BG meters... so they wouldn't have been stabbing their fingertips anyway.
Just thought I'd share :o

This is a nifty way to explain what areas can be used. So simple....

I love that! My DD's family/ babysitters always ask- I think I'll borrow that one! Now I just have to get my daughter to do that. I still catch her testing on the pads of her fingertips... I think I've told her not to about a thousand times!!!

Aaron plays piano and guitar so it's sides only for him.

Abby uses her pads, I use her sides. Abby almost always uses her middle and pointer finger on her left hand, and I use the other 8 fingers.
