First, a huge thank you to all the posters on this board that seem to just embrace the newly diagnosed families that come here for answers and support. What an awesome group of people you seem to be! I have been lurking here for about a month and decided that it was time to say hello…

I am Melissa, a work from home Mommy (eBay) to Emma, who turns 8 on Monday and was recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Thank goodness we caught on to some symptoms early and got a diagnosis before Emma got really sick. We do not have a pediatric endocrinologist in our town but our pediatrician immediately hooked us up with an excellent group of endos and educators about an hour away from our home. They have truly been WONDERFUL! We left the hospital feeling very encouraged and optimistic. Our endo even suggested this site! :)

All though we feel very comfortable (and empowered) by the level of care and education we have received since diagnosis, the one thing we really lack is a “connection” with other families going through a similar experience since there is no support group in our area for families living with Type 1 diabetes. So that is my main reason for coming to CWD…to interact with others that understand the level of care, the ups and downs, etc.

Emma is handling everything extremely well! After the second day of her hospital stay she asked the nurse if she could do her own injections and they let her. She has done them (with supervision, of course) ever since then. Her attitude about the whole thing has been really great! I have yet to hear her even once complain or say anything negative. I know she has only been diagnosed a little over a month so perhaps that will change in time but so far we really have been so blessed with the way she is dealing with everything. She even made a comment in the hospital to one of the nurses that we don’t yet know how but God will use her Diabetes in some way to bless others. Her maturity is way beyond her years…

Just want to introduce myself and say that I look forward to being an active member of the board.

Hello Melissa!

I'm so glad you joined us!!:)
Your sweet Emma sounds amazing and inspiring! I'm forever humbled by the bravery and lack of self pity that our kids exude. They always take it better than we parents do!;)

I hope you find the connection that you're looking for here!

Welcome!

Oh, and BTW, this is a brand new sub-forum so I'm not sure how many members will respond here.

Diabetes makes us all a different kind of parent. For me I like to believe it has made me a better person. Welcome, don't know why I still get tears in my eyes thinking of another little one being diagnosed. It just is sad to think of all the lives this affects. I wish I had found this group a long time ago, glad you are here. Your daughter is lucky to have a Mom that is seeking out information to help her life be better. We are ALL here to support you. There are NO dumb questions here. Dayna
