OMG, I can't stay off Craigslist! If I'm not lurking/posting here, I'm lurking/posting there. LOL

Some knuckle-head put out 3 ride-on toys and a Cozy Coupe for the trash 2 weeks ago, which I promptly removed. One we kept, the others I sold this morning (thank you Craigslist). The money will go towards my ADA walk.

Tonight, another knuckle-head had a beautiful Disney princess ride-on out for the trash. I picked that up, too, and posted it. Just don't tell my daughter!

I'm changing my name to Dumpster Diva. Now I have to fight the urge to drive around looking through people's trash. LMAO

Sounds like a great thing. I cannot believe the good stuff people will put out to the trash.

Have you discovered Freecycle (http://www.freecycle.org/)?

Welcome! The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,488 groups with 5,240,000 members across the globe. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them's good people). Membership is free. To sign up, find your community by entering it into the search box above or by clicking on “Browse Groups” above the search box. Have fun!

Hi Anja,

Just wanted to say "Hi" and I love craigslist too! You should check out Freecycle too, if you haven't already. Love that dumpster diving idea. We had "big pick-up day" here....meaning the garbage man will take anything 1 day a year. I could not believe the great "junk" some of my neighbors put out. Perfectly good furniture, radio flyer wagon, etc., etc. I didn't have the guts to grab their stuff....wish I did....but my husband would be mortified. But boy did the "pros" show up. People with big vans would get out with gloves on and just load up all my neighbors "garbage". I only throw out true trash.

I also love Freecycle, I have someone coming to take away extra furniture we won't need since we're moving soon. Check it out!

I'm with ya, sista! I bought a hot tub off of Craig's list yesterday! My dh is happy with my purchase, but wants to know how I plan to move it to our house. He said "It's not exactly something we can throw in the back of the van and drive off with." :o I have until Tuesday to come up with a plan, the people I bought it from are out of town until then.

I also love Freecycle. I just got rid of a computer desk and some toddler bunk beds on there. It's a great way to get and give good, usable things.

No, I haven't heard of this. Thanks for the tip! We had a saying in my old office "if it ain't for free, it ain't for me." I just wish I had lived up to my motto during my 20's and early 30's. LOL

OMG, seriously? I think I'd have to draw the line at actually digging through the garbage. If it's 90% visible, it's ok.

The same day I started this thread, there was a video on MSNBC about dumpster diving. There was a 40ish woman digging through dumpsters and she found a bag of vegetables to steam up for dinner, an almost perfect watermelon, a bag of good almonds, etc. She wasn't homeless or unemployed, she just liked to rummage. She must have been a hamster or raccoon in a previous life.

At the last military base we lived, a group of us women would go "dumpster diving" every Monday night before the Tuesday trash came. We had a blast! We didn't grab things to sell, only things we wanted for ourselves. (although I should have thought about selling!). People moved in and out all the time, and those who had short orders would leave all kinds of valuable treasures out for the trash. We scored a picnic table, child's slide, hard-sided roof top for our van and many other things I can't recall just now. It was a crazy way to have a "girls night out"--especially if we eyed the trash after a few drinks!

ETA: We did not dig through trash cans--we only grabbed the big things people left out. LOL!!
