Hello out there. This is my first ever forum chat. My name is Synon and our 18 month old son Jonathon has been recently diagnosed with type 1. We are very keen to talk to anyone with a similar aged child as we are finding things quite hard. Main problem is getting him to eat! He used to eat anything but i think he has now worked out that he will eventually get what he wants if he holds out long enough. We aren't completely at the end of our tether but we are getting close!
Hope someone is keen to offer some advice / hints.
Thanks
Synon

Sorry you're having a tough time...and WELCOME! Someone will chime in here with some great advice I'm sure. My daughter was almost 3 when dx'd and figured out the food thing too. Aren't they brilliant??
What kind of insulin is he on? We found it easier to use Novolog to cover meals and snacks and gave her an injection AFTER she ate. That way if she refused to eat, she got no additional insulin and her BG sould be fine.

Welcome Synon....My son was also 18 months when diagnosed. We also had lots of trouble early on with him not eating food we had already given insulin for, very frustrating. I wish I had some great tips for you but really what we did a lot was wait till he was done eating and dose him then. Not ideal but what can you do? I also made it a point to alway have some backup food of similar carb content so that if he didn't want the peanut butter crackers he could chose the graham crackers instead, didn't always work but sometimes. What kind of insulin is he on? Zeb (now 4) is pumping and it makes the grazing and picky eating much easier to deal with.
Sorry not to be of more help but please come back often and ask any questions you have, there are lots of folks with little ones and many have more ideas for you. You may want to start a thread on the parents board and see if others have some thoughts for you. Also including what sort of insulins your son is on will help folks make suggestions that fit your needs.
Best wishes
Robyn
