Are your endo's running cholesterol levels when they do A1c test. I found it odd that my sons first bloodwork scheduled for the end of this year didn't include a cholesterol check. If for no other reason to get a baseline from which to gauge future readings.
(Although our pediatric endocrinologist comes highly recommended and I have no doubt as to her competency, I catch myself wondering if she is treating my son (14, Dx 45 days) the same as she would if she knew she would be treating him 20-30 years from now.)

Yes, we had Cholesterol tested, along with Celiac testing. Thyriod as well. There were probably 1 or 2 other things as well. It seems like their were 4, or 5 different things written down on the orders for the tests.
Our A1C is done on a meter that almost looks like a B/G meter. It is just a finger prick, but requires ALOT more blood then our B/G meter. Was your sons A1C like this, or was it an actual blood draw?
If you want your son to have more tests ran it never hurts to ask. If you don't think your endo is taking good enough care of your son I would speak to her about it. If she isn't meeting your standards after that, please remember that you are paying for a service. If you are not satisfied with the services you are paying for you have every right to fire her. I would rather hurt a doctors feelings then not have my child taken care of properly. Don't get me wrong. I am not saying fore your endo. Just remember you do have that option should you ever have questions to the extent that she may not be doing what she should to take care of your son.
I am sure all endos have a different standard of what tests they run, and what things they feel are best. I know just going from the educator to the doctor I can get awfully confused because both of them have different veiws on how to do things, and what I should be shooting for for B/G levels, and all kinds of other stuff.
Take care, Jamie

We do not, at this time have cholesterol checked. Mainly, we do not have a family history, and because Abby is only 5. However, our CDE did say that if we desire, it most certainly can be run next year. They do a Thyroid and Celiac screen as standard proceedure.

I didn't ask questions when the ordered so many tests at first (I think it was 9 different vials of blood) but I'm glad they did. Like the previous poster said, they checked celiac, thyroid, cholesterol, and the normal diabetes antibodies. He is only 3 but he came back with slightly elevated cholesterol. I guess I didn't think a 3yo could have high cholesterol but I am so glad they screened for it before any real damage was done. Now I have the info I need to make changes...not too many bad habits to change yet, but I definitely think twice before driving through McDonalds!
Our nurse had a good point when she said that often the healthiest person in the family is the one with D since thier health is under a microscope and is checked yearly for any complications. I guess if there is a silver lining....
Anyway...I would ask to have the additional blood work done.
Good luck,
Shannon

I think its important to have our D kids cholesterol under good control (have it checked!) my T1 5 year old had slightly elevated cholesterol. I read somewhere that T1 diabetics have more difficulty dealing with fats than no-d people.
