I am Pam, mom to Joel, aged 7 dx 5/27 with JD. WOW!
I feel overwhelmed. We are so shocked. I just had a feeling that something wasn't right with Joel. He was drinking too much and using the bathroom too much and he was tired. My dh thought I was crazy to take him to a friend's house to check his sugar. We were in the ER within an hour. His sugar read 912. We were transferred to a larger hospital with a pediatric ward. He was in the ICU for 24 hours. We found a wonderful endocrinologist. I feel like this is something I can do now.
I also have a child on the autistic spectrum. Honestly, I'm feeling sorry for myself. I know that it could be worse, I guess I'm just overwhelmed.
I'm glad to know that there are other out there in my boat.

Hi Pam,
Welcome to our community. I hope you feel at ease posting, and I hope you get as much out of the forums as I do.
It's totally normal to feel overwhelmed...it's really too much too soon, isn't it? But things get somewhat more manageable with time.
Sending you ((HUGS))!

Pam - Welcome an sorry to hear about your little boy. It is all very overwhelming in the beginning but I have learned so much here. Everyone is very helpful, non-judgmental and compassionate.
I'm the Mom of 3 boys 19,18 and almost 7, you have me beat. We would have a baseball team together.

I totally understand about feeling overwhelmed.......but I only have two kiddos. ;)
I felt like a walking infomercial for Diabetes Basics 101 !!
But, the overwhelming feeling is evening out. Right now, dh and I are dealing with the off/on guilt of shouldn't we have known sooner, isn't there something we could've done to prevent this...etc.
From what I read/hear around here, this is normal.
I've been reading a lot of posts and these people seem very very nice and have already been supportive.
I'm learning a lot already.
Can't wait to get know you and others around here,
Dawn

Welcome Pam and Dawn! So sorry you had to join us :(. Btw you might find that the Parents Forum is A LOT more active than the General Forum. I'd recommend an introductory post at:
http://forums.childrenwithdiabetes.com/forumdisplay.php?f=3
There is so much great information and support in that forum...I hope you will find it comforting and informational. You are not alone!!!

Thank you all for the warm welcome. :) It does feel good to know we aren't alone in this.
We came home to my mil and fil, who is Type 2. I felt like I was disputing everything he said. They only count sugar, not carbs. I just kindly (I hope it was kind) explained that they've learned a lot in the last 7 years.
