We got our pump prescription two weeks ago. The doctor's office said we didn't have to do anything. It would take 2-3 weeks to get approval...best case scenario. So I called the pump company today...I haven't heard from them, I want to know what's going on. Well, Ryan is not in their system. They have no record of ANYTHING. I have been patiently waiting for 2 stinking weeks and NOTHING has been happening.
The doctor's office better have a great explanation...

That's interesting he said 2-3 weeks. For us (and a lot of people I know) it took about 5-6 months from the time we told the doctor we wanted the pump to the pump start date. Some of that time was required class training before they would order the pump, but it usually takes a long time going through the insurance approval process.
I hope your doctor gives you some answers. That's so discouraging when you get your hopes up and then they are just crushed.

So frustrating!!!!!! Unfortunately our kids care isn't nearly as important to the doctors as it is to us! We can sit on pins and needles for weeks waiting to hear about a pump, a lab result, a referal... whatever, and they just haven't thought about it yet.
I often feel like I have to ask for the same things over and over, and if I don't get a response quickly, I'll ask again. It's the only way to ensure you get what you need!

So sorry Charlotte!
We've had a few similar experiences over the last 2 years. I've gone from a very timid, quiet person to a loud, pushy nag!!! :o ;)
It seems to be the only way to get some people to listen!

Perhaps your insurance is still in the process of approving the pump? I would ask if the pump rep can follow up with your insurance company. Usually they are pretty good about getting things going cause they of course want you on their pump ASAP;)

That is maddening! We had similar delays, but all at the insurance company end. It's really hard to explain to a kid who is anxiously waiting why a simple thing drags on and on and on...

Ok, so here is a question. When I started the paperwork for Julia's pump I had to send in a medical release for the insurance, a paitent info sheet, and an order form. Plus her B/G, carbs, and insulin intake for 3 months. Her doctor faxed in his perscription, and the preaproval papers. I am not sure what company you are going through, or who was responsible to fax the paper work, but I would call, and see if there was something that either the doctor didn't fax, or know he was supposed to fax, or if there was something you needed to fill out, and fax, and no one told you. We are going through Animas, and me or DH had to sign the 3 forms we had to send in. Also Animus has been great about calling us at each step. They called when they recived the fax, they called when they had the info prosessed, and went over it to double check, and they also called when the stuff from the doctor was recived. I would call the doc, and let him know what has happened, or rather not happened. Then call the pump company to find out what you need to do to restart the proscess again. For us it is going to take 4-6 weeks to get the pump, and then I don't know how long until we can hook it up. Our endo thinks Animus's training is better then the educator, so we are going that route.
I am so sorry you have been waiting so long to have it turn out like this. That really stinks. I hope it can get worked out. Best luck to you.

Thanks for the responses...
I got ahold of the doctor's office...they meant it took 2-3 weeks for them to fax the stuff to the pump company! Grrrrr.
Amy, you are right in that no one cares about our kids the way we do. I can tell I'll be a pushy nag when it comes to getting the best possible things for our son...
They faxed the info to the pump company yesterday...after talking to the pump company, I know what they need from us...60 days of blood glucose numbers, signed forms, etc. So I'll get those faxed to them tomorrow.
I am not a patient person...I really seriously hope it doesn't take 5-6 months to get insurance approval...our deductible is paid for this year!!!
Anyway, thanks for the encouraging words, commiseration, and support...I'm sure I'll be looking for more support through this whole process.
(BTW, I think I hate my insurance company almost as much as I hate diabetes!)

We dealt with the rep. He gave me the paperwork right then and there. I filled it out. They dealt with the doctors office and the insurance co. You can bet they have something at stake. They want to sell a pump.
I got a call the next day. All of my paperwork was completed in two. Only because I don't have a fax. We had approval by the insurance co in one week and had our pump two weeks later max.
Had to wait on the doctors office for training for a little. Not sure they are the best way to go. SLOW! They told me it would take four months beginning to end they were busy etc. I said never mind I will take care of it myself. I called them and said okay we're ready, i have our pump when is the next class. They didn't know when they could get ot it. I said never mind I will take care of it. I called the rep, got his trainer who works with their office and had it scheduled within a few weeks.
Thank you smiths medical! Cozmore system is what we use. Awesome service!
Good Luck! God Bless! Tami

Our endo got the ball rolling pretty quickly, but things got slowed down when 1- the ins. co. needed more info and 2- we later found out they wouldn't cover the pump direct from Animas, we had to go through an infusion therapy service. Stay on top of things as best you can and good luck. It will all be worth it in the end. :cwds:
