Our non-d middle son needs a new bed. He wants a bunkbed/loft type system. I found one that I feel is made well and meets all his needs. He is 6 years old so this bed would be his bed until at least the teen years. Thanks for any advice.
My kids love 'em! Although, I finally convinced my D one to move to a day bed - checking BS at night is no fun in a loft bed!

my boys have bunk beds, but the havent had them stacked in forever.
We plan to by them new bedroom furntiure in the next year or so and we are looking into 2 sets of loft beds that have the desk in the bottom.

My daughter has bunk beds but haven't had them up since dxd since I was tired of climbing a ladder to check her finger in the middle of the night. her bunk bed came with a trundle bed as well. 3 beds in one.. lol.. :D
This is our experience -
A loft bed was great from ages 6 - 10. However, my now 10 year old actually needs a real bed that has greater support. (The loft bed has slats and a futon.) Plus, it's been tough rearranging her room as she's grown, because we don't have a lot of flexibility with placing the bed. Just things to think about, and they may not apply in your situation.

We had a Little Tikes house bed-play house underneath, bunk bed on top. This was pre D (funny picture popped in my head, I can just see Cj climbing up into that bad at age 15 :D). It was a pain to try to make the bed so we kept a fitted sheet on the mattress and used a warm fuzzy blanket. I would imagine doing a late night BG check would be a pain.

My oldest son has bunk beds, he loves them as does Cayden.. When Cayden gets older we are going to let him sleep on the bottom of those.. Right now he wants to be in the same room as us, so we let him.

IKEA has a bunk bed which you stack and can also unstack and have 2 beds after. Made of wood. If I find the name of the series, I'll post it.

They are very cool, but are difficult to make up. I found it very hard on my back to change the sheets.

We have a set of bunkbeds. First my older son had them and slept on the top bunk once and decided it was too hard to get down off the bunk to turn off the alarm in the morning so only used it for sleepovers, etc.
Now my second son has them. He slept on the top bunk once and decided it was too hard to get down off the bunk to turn off the alarm in the morning so only used it for sleepovers, etc.
They are a pain to change sheets on.
BUT if my boys were close in age and sharing a room, we'd probably HAVE to use bunk beds due to space issues.

Our girls (7 and 4) share a room and have bunkbeds.
I don't really have much to add to what others said, but I can definitely agree with a few things.
1) A Pain in the a$$ to make! i just keep a fitted sheet on it and she uses a nice throw blanket. Changing that fitted sheet though is a pain as well.
2) It's nice to have a set that will be able to be used as two separate twin beds instead. If we ever have the room for them to split, I wanted to be able to use that feature.
3) Stability, stability, stability. Some sets are cheaply made and I think their lifespan would show that as well.
Our oldest DD has used the top bunk for about two years now.. since she turned 5. At first, I was worried about her climbing down in the middle of the night for bathroom breaks (as she is typically quite clumsy) but she seemed to get used to the ladder rather quickly.

Trevor begged me to get him a loft bed. My sister had 2 of them she was just going to throw away, so I got one for him. This was post D. I absolutely hate it! He liked to cuddle with his stuffed monkey against the wall, just out of my reach :( Last weekend, I finally decided to take it down. But, as far as his weight and the durability of the bed, it seemed ok. He is 5 years old and weighs 60lbs. Although, I did notice when taking the bed down, that there were a few of the screws that had worked themselves loose. (I made my hubby glue the bed, as well as use the screws, just in case)

My daughter got a loft bed about 6 months before she was dx'd. I wish we had known then how hard nighttime checks would be....I have one of the chairs from my dining room table next to her loft so I can climb up and check her in the night (I'm very short). If she's way over by the wall, i still can't get to her. It's great to have the space underneath it, but it's a giant pain in the tush for changing. We do the fitted sheet on the bottom and duvet covered blanket for her, but it's still a hassle.

My 4 year old has bunk beds, Full on top of Full. We ordered them on line at www.simplybunkbeds.com for around $600. They are very good quality beds and have alot of support for the top bunk, slats going both ways and about one inch apart. Our reason for the Full on Full is that Brenton is a tumbler and no matter if he sleeps on top or bottom he has alot of room to roll around. I also like the particular ones we chose because the top rail is higher than usual. The website I gave you has so many different options and when we ordered Brenton's they were doing free shipping. Also, if he decides he doesn't want bunk beds anymore then we have got a bed for Aidan. LOL!

We considered a loft bed with desk under it for my non-d child. Both kids rooms are small. However we decided on a captain's bed -- it wasn't as high off the floor and we could eliminate a dresser that we had in her room because there were six drawers under her bed. It was a good compromise.

My eldest wants a loft bed badly, but I just can't see climbing up there to check BG at night! So she's staying in her daybed until we figure something else out.
