Matt got his cast off, and a re-x-ray of the arm. Plain and simple, its not healing as fast as it should. And the dr said its becouse of the D. He will be in a splint for the next 4 weeks and another x-ray. :(
my insides are a tornado of emotions fluxuating wildly right now. Im so mad, sad, frustrated right now. I want to scream and cry and have a good ol fashioned temper tantrum like I am two years old, flop on the floor, kick and pound and whine.
I thought, complications, way down the road. Yea... NOT. complications at every turn is more like it.
bright side is, he is happy with the splint so he can take it off to shower and bathe. It also will not be as hot as a cast.

Which Doc said it was D related? The Endo? Or the Ortho? Seth has had a broken arm, D didn't affect the healing:confused:

Unless your child runs high all the time, the diabetes shouldn't cause the healing to be slower. Consistenly high sugar can cause that after years of diabetes.
I think your doctor, who probably isn't a endo, made the wrong call. Your son has had diabetes for only a year. I would dump that advice. There is some other reason for the slow healing.

About 6 months after my daughter was diagnosed, she was bitten by a dog. It appeared to heal okay, but she could bend her fingers. Turned out that she had callatious (not sure on the spelling). The outside healed fine, the inside tissues did not. The doctor told us it was because of the diabetes. I was extremely upset, thinking I was doing something wrong. So we went to the endo, and she said it definitely wasn't diabetes. Sometimes people in general just don't heal correctly, for whatever reason.
I think doctors who don't see diabetes everyday are quick to blame it for every little thing. Try not to be upset. And talk to your endo. I'd bet you'd get the same advise as I did.
Hope he feels better soon!

this is what i was thinking. i have non-D friends who've had fractures, breaks, whatever....slow healing, recasting, just wasn't happening for them. i swear every "body" heals at a different rate anyway.
hope things get better for him.

I would definately talk to your childs endo. I certainly understand how you feel though.

Our dermatologist assured me that my son's T1 would not affect his ability to heal, that there is no medical/scientific evidence of this 'myth'. I think it may come from the horror stories that are out there for people who are suffering w/T2 and have gone undiagnosed for years. As long as our children are managing their diabetes, wound healing should not be affected. I would check w/endo. Just my 2 cents:o

Just to let you know. All of Molly's doctors including her dentist have attributed something in my opinion(and her endo's opinion) not D-related, to D. I think anytime anything goes on with our kids that is not considered 100% normal they just say it's D-related.;)
Hope he's all healed up soon!:)

thanks... I feel better. It was the ortho dr who told me that. When we saw the endo with the broken arm in tow, he didnt think anything of it at the time cept he is a rambunctious 9 year old boy.
