View Full Version : Do you color your hair?

If you don't mind telling me, do you color your hair, and if so, how, e.g. professionally, at home, etc? I must say I have never done this and don't know a thing about it, but I saw my hair in the sunlight today, and I have a lot more gray than I thought so I'm considering a change...

I've been coloring mine for more years than I care to remember!

I started out with highlighting but in recent years have had to move up to all over. When I was young, single and on a budget, I did my own, now I treat myself and get it done professionally.

Same with my DH. He always wonders why I fret so much over hair!

Technically I do not color my hair. My girlfriend does it in her kitchen sink.

I did it a couple of times when younger but really started feeling the need last Christmas.

And now the white hairs are fighting back.

I used to highlight my hair until I got so tired of spending well over $100 every few months - well plus more and more gray. Now I've been using L'Oreal Excellence or Preference. It's works really well. Take the plunge - you're worth it!! :D

I have been coloring my own hair for years, and highlighting my self too. Every great once in a while, I will get it done somewhere, but not very often. I have to many gray/white hairs to not color it.

I tried highlights but I just am not into the maintance, can't imagine a full dye job. I have let the grays come in. I am going to own my gray...I have earned them! :)

Seriously, my mother had a friend that I "inherited" when she passed that has the most beautiful gray hair. Mind you, I am only 32 and I know it ages me, but hopefully it won't all go gray for many years. Then I hope it is as beautiful as hers.

I say that now, but don't hold me to it :)

I used to highlight.

Then we would use the highlights to cover the greys that were coming in.

Now we have to do all over color to color the about 50% grey hair that I have.

I have to get the roots done about every 5 weeks.

I pay a fortune

It is my one luxury in life - I'm not giving it up! :)

Okay, now that's weird!!:p

I think God put hair color in a bottle for a reason! I have been mostly gray since I was about 25 and have been coloring my hair for about 15 years; I used to do it myself, but now I have it professionally done about every 10 weeks or so.

I have mine professionally colored every 6-8 weeks. I have been for 5 years or more. I am fortunate to have a relative that works at a salon and I get a reduced rate :)

I was teased and never taken seriously, was called a airhead among other things when I was a kid and in my teens..

I thought blondes were supposed to have more fun!! I knew a girl in HS that had the most flaming red hair you ever saw in your life. The poor girl, she HATED it. Everyone would call her "red" and make degrading sexual comments to her. I felt so sorry for her (she was so sweet). Well, one day I saw her much later after HS, and she had dyed her hair blonde. Therefore, to her, blonde was an improvement!

We had blondes in HS, and no one ever was mean to them, in fact they were worshipped like godesses.

Ive been coloring my hair for years on my own. Its easy & inexpensive. The cheapest salon here would cost @ $75 and I wouldnt feel right spending that much on my hair, but thats me. Im a natural blonde but weirdly enough I have dark roots. ( My father was born white blonde and it darkened to brown by the time he was 6 and my mom is a natural brunette. Im a hybrid I guess lol. All my boys are a shade of med to dark blonde and Lanie is brunette like her daddy) So I color to keep my roots the same as the rest although the last 3 years or so its been to cover the gray that started popping out around the time my oldest started to drive. Every once in a while, Ill color it red cause hubby asks. ( Dont ask lol. Its from a long standing bet we had) Ever since I tried red though, when I go back to blonde, it has red highlights come thru. Weird huh? Im red now but havent been in about 4 years. And the last 4 years my blonde has that red tinge.

Yes, Im babbling lol. Im out of pain meds so Im not sleeping much & I tend to ramble the more tired I am. :D

I guess I am one of the weird ones that has never colored her hair. All I ever do with it is get it cut at a salon.

I have been highlighting my hair for years and it finally got WAY to blonde  so now I have been trying to darken it for the last 3 years... Even though I have been going to the salon for this, it is not as easy as it sounds!! I finally am "there" now with the color where I can just go every 3 months or so to maintain the color. But now the greys are starting to come in  so I am sure I will have to find a new solution soon again LOL. I probably spend more money on my hair (between shampoos and treatments) than on any other part of my body or make-up combined. I blame it on the Florida humidity!!!

I've been going grey since I was about 25 too. At first I colored at home but eventually (i think because of the texture of my hair) the home color just didn't take anymore. so I get it done at the salon every 5 weeks when I get my hair cut. My hair is short, so I have to cut it that frequently anyway and it grows really fast so I normally have a good 3/4" that needs covering at the roots. I figure if I were to let it go I'd be a good 75% grey if not more. My natural hair color is nearly black with almost no red in it but that's hard to do with color and have it look natural so now I go a bit lighter than normal which is a dark brown. And i get foils every few weeks.

Started going grey in my teens! (Shocking betrayal by my gene pool) Colored it professionally for YEARS. Quit cold turkey about 10 years ago, that was not a pretty sight during the transition, but now I really like my silver hair. (Maddie says it's "salt & pepper") I get a lot of compliments from women, men... I think they like it less. I don't much care, I like it and it works for me. :D

I was going and having my hair highlighted to "blend in the gray" but now, after "d", I can't afford the salon options anymore. I just bought some hair color and went for it. I have to say, I had a bit of a trial and error to get the right color but now, it looks just like my "natural" hair color before highlighting. I say go for it!

Yes, I do colour my hair...well, get highlights actually. I've got very dark brown hair, and I get either dark burgundy highlights or light-brown ones (yep, I'm a rebel ). I usually do this at the hairsalon...when I have the money. When I don't, I buy haircoulouring from the drugstore and do it myself at home. Then I just put the coulour all over. So far, no problems, although some products do make my scalp itch some.
I've also tried with henna. The only thing I've done is add 1 egg to the mixture, since henna tends to dry out the hair too much.

Also, if you're concerned about eco-friendly and low-toxicity products, shop around. Greenpeace also edited a few years back a Cosmetox list. FYi, I don't pay much attention to this...yet (but makes for interesting reading).

Before kids I used to go and have my hair cut, colored and highlighted. Now after kids and their growing expenses I have to resort to the at home bottle. I use Loreal Feria and I love it. I have to do it every 3 weeks though because my hair grows really fast and I am really grey. In 3 weeks I will have a white line framing my face.:D

I do color it, but its not what I want. I prefer to wear my greys with pride because I earned every one of them. :p But my husband doesnt like them, and I figure its not worth an argument. So he does it.

Okay, now that's weird!!:p

Nope- I am right there with her...all my life, I wanted a different color hair, but my mom always said - if you dye your hair - then it will never get back to the original blond! Once, I did a temp strawberry blond, my now ex about died! Then, I decided what the heck - so I went to salon, said I want highlights, or lowlights, or whatever - paid a fortune - came home -my oldest asked if I even had anything done!

So nope, I don't dye my hair - but it is funny, my oldest - who has the same hair color, was just complaining about how all her friends get to try different hair colors - but she can't, cause everyone wants her color and no one will let her dye it! She is my minime!

I'm a proud natural blonde that does get highlights. I go once every four months to lessen the cost and when I do the math I actually pay less per year than my DH and DS who go much, much more frequently (for haircuts!).

My mom is also a natural blonde and since she's been going gray she's had highlights even LESS often because the light grays kind of mimic the platinum streaks! I hope this happens for me too.

Like others have said, highlighting my hair is my ONE splurge and I'm grateful that I haven't had to give it up yet. :)

I used to, but since I started going grey, I stopped. My grandmother was the most wonderful person in the universe, and she had the most beautiful silver hair. I always hoped mine would turn out just like hers.

And to the men: remember, bald is beautiful. :)

This brings up a good point. It's looks alittle like I have highlights, but I do all over blonde color. I think the highlight looking part could be where I have gray and the color takes differently? I have no idea. Looks decent though as there is some shade variation as if there is highlighting. I have to say I don't miss spending a couple of hours in the salon every 3 months - well except when I can make it in for a facial - now those are heavenly! :)

The women in my wife's family have consistently been gray by the time they turn 21. My wife was blessed...she lasted until her late twenties.

We color my wife's hair about once a month or so. I say "we" because I help. She does the front and on the sides where she can see, but I do the top and the back.

It's a family thing. My FIL has been helping my MIL color her hair for 40 years now.

Preference 5G - Medium Golden Brown. My wife refers to it as "Mousy Brown". ;)

I have my hair highlighted professionally about every 10 weeks. I like to keep it close enough to my natural color that I don't have to go any more often than that. (My natural color is a light brown, and my highlights are a medium blonde.)

I'm a firm believer that if you want to go lighter, you shouldn't go any lighter than the lightest that your hair was as a child. It generally won't work with your complexion or eyebrows if you go much lighter than that.

If you just want to try some semi-permanent color, I'd recommend the Natural Essence line. You can't really get more than a couple of shades lighter, but it will brighten your natural color, and cover gray (if that's an issue). I used it quite a bit as a poor college student to give myself reddish highlights. If you don't like it, it washes out gradually over a few weeks' time.

I started getting mine highlighted professionally a couple years ago. I am a natural redhead (always hated that growing up.) Just when I started liking it my hair started getting darker. Now it is a very mousy color with some gray so I highlight. My niece asked me once what color my hair would be when I am old. I told her, same color it is now. :D

OMG, LOL that skunk is fake - I hadn't noticed. I just figured it was a real one taken from google images or something. haha ha :p

Just finished coloring my hair - L'Oreal #8! Don't try it when you're not fully awake - I accidentally put in the wrong tube contents in the big bottle - I put the preconditioning for ends tube - scraped some out with my toothbrush (then threw it away). The haircolor still worked, but pay attention to what you're doing - key point! Adhd runs in families you know!

I've been coloring mine since my 20s. I started getting grays in high school. Now it's every 4-5 weeks at the salon. Although I'm starting to think I should save the money and just go gray.

Started coloring my hair back in high school. Colored regularly for years. I desperately wanted to be a redhead(matched my personality), then I started having kids and didn't have time or inclination. So after probably about 20 years, I'm back to my natural color-mousy brown. Every so often the hair color boxes beckon me, but thus far I've ignored. I tend to spill the stuff in drips and don't feel like staining my new house with whatever loreal, clairol, or Garnier color falls into the basket. May do it again if grey starts showing up. I've only seen a strand or two(knock on wood).
But het, if you're thinking of experiment, try a semi permament color(washed out in 28 shampoos) to see if it's something you want to do. If you have longer hair, get 2 boxes. Better to have too much than not enough. Block out an hour of time for yourself, get a magazine, lock bathroom door and color away.

I use to get a highlight, low light and a dye in between along with a hair cut and couldn't bring myself anymore to spend almost Sssshhhhh $210.00 every 5-6 weeks. So now I use the old color in the bottle which reminds me I will be doing that this weekend...

My sister owns a hair salon so whenever she can fit me in (every 3 or 4 months) I go in and tell her what color highlights I want and then she does whatever she wants  I can't complain, I only pay her $20 and she tells me I get $150 worth of color done  Although, just once, I would like her to actually do the colors I ask for LOL
