Ryland had been having really, really bad pains in his stomach and his side and any time we would try to give him something to eat he would throw up so his numbers were going up and down like crazy all of yesterday. So we took him to the er and they ran some tests and said that he has appendicitis. His surgery is scheduled for today at 9:00 but he's not allowed to eat or drink anything before the surgery. How will this effect his numbers now? And how will the surgery itself affect his numbers afterwards?

Oh I'm sorry to hear the poor guy has appendicitis. I'm not sure what time zone you're in -- maybe he's already done?

Anyway, if you can get in touch with his endo for instructions that would be good. You might want him on less basal through the night to avoid lows -- I guess if he's heading down they could give him a glucose drip?

Good luck -- got my fingers crossed for smooth sailing and that he's feeling better soon.

I'd definitely call the pedi endo - they need to work with you asap.

I hope it all goes well and he is better soon. Keep us updated.

Oh poor kid. I had my appendix out at age 6. Spent my 6th birthday in the hospital bed. Of course in the 60's is was a huge surgery. I don't have D but it was still huge. He is going to be sore for awhile. Poor thing. Be sure you check his bg throughout the night, if you can stay with him in the room. Alert any nurse if he is going low so they can adjust with drip or perhaps he will be able to suck a little juice later on. Keep us posted.

He is going to be sore for awhile.

Actually, that hasn't been true in our experience.

Today's appendectomy usually has a very fast recovery. My D son is the only one in our family who still has his appendix -- the other four of us have had it taken out. Unless the appendix has ruptured, the incision is very small and the pain afterwards is minimal. All four of us felt MUCH better -- even right away in the recovery room. The pain of the infected appendix is SO much worse than the incision. We all felt better immediately.

Hope it goes very well for your son!
