I had an issue last year when we were putting together Lia's IEP last year. They had me put in her diabetes accomodations but the principal said she didn't think it would apply to latch-key (Lia goes in the AM) because latch-key wasn't part of the educational day which is what an IEP covers etc. At that time I didn't push it for various reasons (basically Latch-key was already doing everything they needed to and I just wanted the IEP in place so she could have the services it provides education wise.

Then this year I decided to push it as she will be attending summer latch-key. I brought it up with the district's special services director and he gave me a verbal agreement in January. I spoke to him again last month and he said again, no problem, let me just look into exactly how we will do it. The special education teacher set up the IEP meeting etc and I thought we were set. She called me yesterday about something else and said the special services director would also call me. He did.

This is what they want to do. On first thought I thought, ok, that will work. Now I'm not so sure. He said they will have wording in the IEP to the effect that the issues covered in Lia's IHP (individual health plan) will pertain to all actvities (before, during and after school) run the by the school district. I told him her health plan does not have everything the diabetes accomodations in her IEP currently covers. He said we will have a separate meeting (me, dh, him and the principal) to write up her health plan so it does include those items.

I guess I won't know until we sit down and do that. But her IEP meeting is tomorrow. I don't want to sign the IEP until we have the health plan written to my satisfaction. So should I just not sign it OR should I sign it saying I disagree with some aspects (you can sign it with different levels of acceptance)? She currently has last years IEP in place, but I don't know if my not signing this will cause her to lose what accomdations she has for her education (in special ed part of the day) until it's signed etc...

I have left a message for an ADA advocate who I e-mailed about this once before, but I thought I would ask you what you all think?

Can you bring with you the changes you want in the health plan? And do them both at the same time? I think I'd try to kill both birds with one stone. Or at least leave the meeting with an appt for the health plan...and accept the IEP based on the HP.
