View Full Version : Does this sound like a Staph infection?

For the last few days, Seth's nail beds have looked infected. He was at his dad's, and hasn't been taken to the doc. (No suprise there:mad:) So tonight, I see a round crater looking sore on his leg, it looks slightly wet in the middle. Does this sound like Staph? If so, will Neosporin clear it, or does it have to have antibiotics? I'm supposed to work from 3 to 10pm, and Seth HATES it when I take him out of school to go to the doc. I will if I have to though...Thoughts?:(

Did he have a scab in that spot? Sometimes when a sore is picked at you end up with something that resembles what you are describing. Explain the nail beds a little more.

When I was a kid I loved being taken out of school.:)

My oldest son battled staph for about 6 months. His started as a pimple (boil) and then became red, swollen and hot to the touch. His arm was swollen to the size of his thigh.

He required 2 different antibiotics and a topical antibiotic as well.

We have battled staph - from locker room varieties to the very serious type that put my son on a picc line for 7 weeks. I always think "better safe than sorry." It is often easy to address early on and much more difficult later. Get it looked at if you are worried.

Neospporin will not kill staph. I would take him to the doc and have him looked at .. it takes 48 hours for the test to come back....
My 18 mth old neice has had staph 2 times 1 in which she was in the hospital for a week and the other because her mom knew what to look for caught it verry early... she was put on 2 different meds 1 oral and 1 topical ro 10 days each....also penacillin based antibotics will not kill staph...
I would rather be safe than end up in the hospital.
please keep up posted STAPH can be very dangerous

If it is an unexplained abscess, I would take him him. As a kid, I had Impetigo that my mom didn't seek treatment for for like 6 months - it was horrendous, and my aunt has been battling a staph infection for 3 years and it has basically killed her heart - they wanted her to get a transplant, but cannot risk cutting into her to perform the operation. The infection has attacked her heart, liver, and other vital organs and she will die from it - so, not to be the grim reaper, but yeah - get him to the doctor!

Heather I would take him in this morning. I know he hates missing school but if it is Staph it is very serious.

Here's the link to Mayo Clinic's description and picture of a staph infection. I don't have any experience with staph myself, but I would be concerned with a sore that looks like a crater that is wet in the middle.

The nail beds are red, and slightly raised on two fingers, then he had a small cut that was a little red around it. He went to bed at 135 and woke up with a bg of 83 this morning, (Lots of exercise though, he had been at the lake with his dad) so hopefully it's was just a little infected, not staph. I will look when he gets home and make an appt. if it hasn't improved. The nail beds did look better last night, then I found the sore:(

When in doubt.... check it out.....

Kira had a spot on her bum they thought might have been staph, so we used Mupirocin ointment(prescription) and it got better.

I hope it's just a scab, but I think you're smart to have it checked out.

From someone who has a child who loves to get staph...warm compresses work wonders. Glad you're going to the doctor though!

I took Seth in today, he's on Keflex and an ointment. He didn't culture it but thought it looked suspecious(sp?) enough to treat it. Thanks everyone:D

Keflex is a very basic, first string choice for skin infections. If it doesn't get better by the middle of the week I would go back.

I will, thanks, he said to come back in if it wasn't improving too. It was already starting to scab with the Neosporin, so hopefully it will heal quickly:cwds:
