This is my best guess, but I think it has to do with search engines. I recently signed up for a service to get my site in more search results and those terms sound familiar.

yep, they are web crawlers - they're crawling (like spiders) and collecting the messages so that when someone googles the pages are all nice and updated. :) spiders can be our friends. :)
