Hi all!
** I want to preface this by reminding you that I am the Step-mom of a type 1 girl and she lives 3 hours from us. We have little control and my husband is left in the dark most of the time.**

OK. Stepdaughter has been complaining lately about a teacher that has supposedly been giving her a hard time about leaving class early to do her shot before lunch. She tells her Dad that the teacher is failing her for missed work. So, hubby asked her mother last night what was going on and she did not seem to be concerned and said that the child was dealing with it. Husband asked if there was a 504 plan in affect and stepdaught's mother had NO CLUE what that was.

Now, how is it that I know about this (thanks to this site) and the mother and primary care giver to this little girl does not? We sent her a 504 and explanation of what it was last night and I truly hope she takes this seriously and gets one in place for her daughter.

My question is this...is it normal NOT to know about 504 plans?

Thanks gang!

I don't think I would have known what a 504 was without this site. The school certainly didn't offer one. They sat us down with an nurse and she told us how it was handled. I didn't know enough at the time to question any of it.

I asked for it at the high school too. Again, it was never offered.

It must really depend on the school system.

Brian was dx'd half way through grade 1. Immediately upon our return from the hospital, our school called to set the meeting up to go over his protocols and write the 504 plan. I hadn't heard of one before, and the school gave me one as a template. I have, since then, switched to the templates found here and my school now passed that one out to newly diagnosed kids.

I strongly suspect that I am in a minority in this, though.

I think that many kids get good care "unoffcially" or without the 504 plan. I take great comfort in having one, though.

good luck in figuring this out. I can't imagine how complicated it gets with two households.

Thank you CC.

When I found out about Sydney's DX I was on the computer for weeks educating myself and searching for every piece of information I possibly could about Type 1. That is just me I guess. I felt like I needed to know EVERYTHING and that is how I found out about the 504 plans. :cwds:

I never thought to have my husband mention it to stepdaughters Mom because I assumed the Doctor would tell her about it. Maybe he did, I really will never know. But, I will be sure to speak up more now for Sydney's sake.:o

our dr gave us the 504 form she wanted at the school. Is it normal not to know... or not to remember, sure. Im lucky I remember my name after diagnosis much less getting a form for my childs school... I probaby would have been another parent who did what the school wanted had it not been for matts dr who told the school what SHE wanted. At least, till I got to this site... then, I would have realized my error and corrected it myself.
