Just thought it might be nice to have a happy diabetes at school story. My son's school has been very accomodating from the beginning. We've never had a 504 plan but he was dx at age 15 in his sophomore year so we've only had to deal with it for a relatively short time. But from the start, the nurse has always been helpful and willing to do what we want (test at her office, test in class, etc). The teachers have never given him a hard time about testing, snacking, leaving for the nurse's office, etc. The counselor called the other day to see what he needed for his AP Exams and has made that happen. Fortunately he's never had any big problems (ie extreme lows) so we haven't totally tested the system.
But we got the info about graduation the other day. It gives all the rules....you may NOT hoot and holler(they used nicer terms) for your child...etc. And the seniors are 'expected to arrive at school for departure to the graduation with only your cap and gown in hand.' 'at 8:00 am' for an 11:00 graduation ceremony??? So, they go w/o food or drink for 4+ hours? Hmmm. So I call today and ask for the guy in charge of all this. He's busy so the secretary takes a message, can she help me. So I ask about this, does it mean no water and no food? 'Yes, it shouldn't be a problem unless he's diabetic or something...' LOL BINGO I explain that he is diabetic and she says the guy in charge will call. He calls and says to send food, whatever I want. They have plenty of time to snack btwn practice and the real event. They don't want anyone passing out, etc etc.
So, Alex will be fine! But what about all those other kids w/ no food and drink for 4+ hours!!!! I guess they haven't had problems with this in past years. (He'll have candy in his pockets too just in case.......)
