Hi Joanna
Ben's diabetic specialist nurse told us we could claim DLA - Disability Living Allowance. We have applied and we are waiting for them to set up the payments. It works out at around £40 per week. The amount of extra food we have to buy certainly warrants it!!!!!!!
The forms are lengthy and there has to be input from a health professional, but you can do them online, so at least if more info is needed etc, it's not too bad.
They are going to backdate the payments to 3 months after Ben was dx'd. He was dx'd 10th April, so when the payments comes through it will be paid from 10th July to date and every month thereon.
Hopw that answers your queries. Please don't hesitate if you require any further information.
BTW - Both my husband and I work and are on relatively good salaries. This is not taken into account for DLA....what I mean is sometimes you get nothing because you are out earning a living. Finally it's nice for the Government to be giving us something!!
Regards
Jackie

Can I ask - would you be entitled to UK Government benefits as you are a British citizen - or are you considering a move to the uk?
BTW - check out the follwoing link for more info:

Reading your posts about DLA, are you aware that if DLA is awarded you are also entitled to carers allowance

You can only claim Carer's Allowance if your child receives Disability Living Allowance at the middle or higher rate and you spend at least 35 hours a week caring for the person getting Disability Living Allowance. So, if the person who gets the DLA only gets the lowest rate, then you will not be able to claim Carers Allowance.
Also you can’t claim Carer’s Allowance if you are in full-time education with 21hours or more a week of supervised study or earn more than £84 a week after certain deductions have been made (such as Income Tax).

Thanks for this. After checking we found out that I was entitled to carers allowance. Pity that when we got dla at the middle rate, no-one told us we could get the other  . Anyway we get it now which will help. Though I do wish that we didn't qualify iykwim :(
