View Full Version : OT: Old ER episode
Ok just posting this cause it has me questioning. Watching an old ER episode from 1994. ( Ive seen them all but am a diehard fan from day 1 ! ) Ok baby comes in w/ respiratory distress. Got an IV going, ventilating ect. Looked down the baby's throat, saw & removed an earring...Ventilated some more...........dr asks for a blood sugar.....nurse says 20......ventilates more, gives dextrose.......all of a sudden baby is awake & crying.
1....is it me or was this just not realistic
2...why would you get a bg on a choking baby
and 3....dextrose works that quick? I mean we are talking 2 minutes tops and a critically low sugar
I know its only TV but Im still curious .

Hmm Maybe he knew already that the baby had D.. Maybe the mother told him prior to the arrival.. lol As far as the other question I have no clue about dextrose but I am told it works fast.. And is it realistic, not really.. But then again alot of things on that show aren't/

Dextrose does work that fast. After receiving a dose of it, a patient can wake up in a manner of a few minuets.

No she was asking about prior conditions, injuries ect. I gotta agree, in the beginning the show was bad medically...I had just gotten out of school for surgical technician and would just rip it apart as I watched...the one good thing is, it made me curious about a lot so I would go searching. And this was 10 years before I even had a computer lol.......the show has gotten better though. I think they got a new medical advisor a couple years in. :D

I heard that too
The problem was the baby wasn't unconscious due to low blood sugar. She was unconcious due to lack of air from the earring in her throat. They gave her the dextrose but I think what woke her up was finally getting airflow.
They said nothing about her having diabetes - I wonder if the low BG was more from the lack of oxygen and the trauma associated with it.
