Soooo frustrating! Samantha has cellulitis again. This is the second time in less than a year. Of course the kid has infusion sets in her body all the time and has never had an issue with infection at her sites, it is always other places! This time she has it on her upper thigh.
So basically I can look forward to a weekend of high BGs, hot compresses and lots of antibiotics. Plus with the increased incidence of MRSA these days it kinda freaks me out.

I fear this as well. Trey can only wear sites in his rear at the moment due to fat or lack of.
Is the cellulitis related to the infusion site? I'm sorry if you said that, maybe I'm not reading correctly...
Is there anything that can prevent this??
Sending you well wishes and GOOD BG's

No, it isn't related to the site. She's never had a site infection, ever. The first time she had cellulitis was near her groin, this time it is her upper thigh on the back. I am assuming she had an irritated hair follicle or something. We live in a really dry climate, so maybe that plays a role. I'm not really sure. Samantha tends to have really fair, sensitive skin, so it seems to be her weak point these days.

(((((HUGS))))) Sorry she has this again, I hope it goes away quickly so she can feel better and you can get some rest...I can relate a little because Seth gets infections in his nail beds. He started biting his nails/nail beds at dx'd:(

No, hypertrophy is essentially scar tissue that has built up due to injecting (or inserting sets) into the same place. Cellulitis (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cellulitis/DS00450)is a bacterial infection of the skin. It has nothing to do with cellulite. It can be very serious, especially if it is not treated quickly and effectively, or if the bacteria is resistant to antibiotics. Cellulitis is often a common cause of concern for folks with diabetes because of the impaired healing that can occur. However, it is not likely that at Sam's age she would experience this complication, however it is better to be cautious with all diabetics when treating a case of cellulitis.
MRSA is essentially an antibiotic resistant form of staph. It stands for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. It is the stuff that has been in the news lately. You may have heard of "flesh eating bacteria"? That's what happens when the MRSA superbug cannot be treated and contained. Anytime you have a skin infection it will likely be caused by either strep or staph bacteria. Most cases are caused by staph. If that form of staph is resistant to antibiotics then you're in trouble. If you do a youtube search for MRSA you'll likely find some very unpleasant video showing footage of treatment of these types of skin infections. Don't watch them if you have a weak stomach or can't handle gore.

I am sorry you are going through this. Cellulitis is no fun. I am glad you caught it and have gotten treatment for your daughter. I have had it several times. In fact once I thought I had it go away, it would come back. That is what lead my doctor to check for Diabetes. For information the one thing I would notice is that I would see a red area on my lower leg and then I noticed it would start to spread over the course of several hours. I would go to the doctor immediately. I have seen too many people ignore the symptoms and then end up in the hospital.
