Just feeling very let down at the moment. For the last decade i have had no issues with diabetes, we have got along ok, not always walking down the beach hand-in-hand, but generally we get along ok.
I went for a number of jobs recently (as i soon will be a graduate) in the health field, in my local area in Australia. One of these jobs, i particularly would like.
At the information session it was said that the medical declaration would only be opened (as you had to fill it in and seal it) if you would be offered a job. Mine was opened, read, and an appointment made for a physical to be done.
I had the physical yesterday, and naturally am still waiting to hear the results, and whether i have been offered one of the positions. This bothers me though, as i already have employment in this field (as an under-graduate) and have proven i am able to work well, as i did one of my clinical experience rotations at this very healthcare venue.
However, all the 'normal' people have already received acceptance or rejection letters from this place, and i have heard nothing apart from having the physical. Its disappointing, because i would like to be celebrating with the others, or moving on, whichever way it goes. Time is also ticking to reject or accept the other offers i have received. And being that they were willing to spend the time and money on a physical, i have now got my hopes up, and kind of feel it will be discriminatory if i dont get it.The other thing they can do, is say i have restrictions to my work (which doesnt make much sense to me) which would be unfair as i dont have restrictions now, nor did i during my clinical experience at that healthcare venue.
On a brighter note, i got accepted at every other place i applied, and some of these were in very high demand.
Opinions please?!?! Thanks

I think you have a few different ways to looking at this.

You were accepted by all the others so you must be good. The fact that you haven't recived a letter yet isn't totally bad. Maybe it has something to do with the mail system, or maybe when they wrote/typed your address to send you your letter someone made a typo.

On the other hand, if they are not sure what to do about you because of the diabetes maybe this is not the best place to work. Maybe they wont be able to work with you, or maybe you will have to face discrimination because of it.

I am not sure when your deadlines are, but I would look at the other offers seriously. See which one would be best for you. Not just the money, but which one is going to allow you to take a break long enough to treat a low if you need it, or if they offer health coverage or other benifit packages that might be something to look at too. If it gets to close to the deadline take one of the jobs that you were offered that looks like a good place to work.

Sometimes things workout, not the way we thought they would, but just as good, if not better. "Whenever fate closes a door, it opens a window"

Good luck, I hope you get what you want, Jamie

Nikki,

Well maybe it's not going to be bad news. Especially in the health field, I would think you would be a wonderful candidate having been through and successful with your diabetes!

My son is off for his first year of college tomorrow after just being diagnosed Type I in June. I know there are more challenges as he moves on later on his own with the employment and insurance issues. Good for you for where you are now with your graduation and bright future in front of you!!

I wish you great success, and keep us posted on how this goes.

Take care.

Hi guys, thanks for ur support. I did get the job. I still think it is a lot unfair that diabetes requires me to strip down to my underwear and pee in a cup for a physical. I really think my previous experience at that institute should have been sufficient. A lot of people lie on application forms, and a lot of people pass through as 'healthy' when really they are overweight, smoking, or suffering from conditions such as poly-cystic ovarian syndrome. These things indiviually do not make you unhealthy, but nor does diabetes. I think all new staff should have the pre-employment medical, not just those of us honest enough to state our condition. Anyway, thanks for your support guys.

Nikki,
I think you have a point with your frustration on being singled out for the pre-employment physical. Thanks for posting, and congratulations on getting the job!!! WooHoo!!!!!! :cwds:
